Two Local Missing Snowmobilers Found, Only One Survived (Updated)

While I have to say that after 48 hours in below freezing (and sometimes below zero) weather, it’s hard to expect anything good to come out of this, but it’s still sad.

Two snowmobiles and footprints in the deep snow led searchers to a Bend father and son, missing for two days in the cold, snowy woods near Mt. Bachelor, but only the son survived, authorities said Wednesday.

Update: The deceased father is apparently still out in the woods, and they plan on getting him tomorrow after they recover from searching for the last 48 hours.

You Have To Laugh At This One

Because I’m sure these local crooks were

It was no laughing matter for Bend police who stopped a pickup and arrested two men early Friday on charges of stealing a large canister of nitrous oxide — the anesthetic known as “laughing gas” — from a nearby dental office.

[…]

Nitrous oxide is commonly known as “laughing gas” due to the euphoric effects of inhaling it. Used in surgery and dentistry as an anesthetic, it also can be used as an oxidizer in internal combustion engines, Ritchie said.

Looking at their mug shots, it looks like they’re having a good time.

I Hate This Time Of Year

If you didn’t know already, this area is getting pummeled with nasty weather, and while I don’t mind the Winter that much (if I did, I would’ve moved a long time ago), I do have the first major Winter storm as nobody (including me) is ready for it. The tarp covering our firewood wasn’t secured well enough, so it ended up in the neighbor’s yard (and I know my neighbors read this, so if you guys notice foot prints in your yard along the fence, those were mine from tonight). The roads are a total mess, and people are driving like idiots.

I commute to Sunriver to work Sunday-Thursday and it’s this time of year I really wish I worked in Bend. Not only does Sunriver typically get nastier weather than Bend, but the stretch of highway between the two cities is arguably one of the most dangerous in the State. Every year I witness at least one accident, usually more. People, commonly tourists or folks new to the area, think they can drive that stretch of highway at normal speed, despite the fact that the road is coated with ice and snow. Those are the people I’m genuinely scared of: the out-of-towners driving their SUVs that fly around with their four-wheel-drive summer tires on, thinking they’re invincible because they have four-wheel drive. Nevermind that having four-wheel-drive really doesn’t help you in this weather — it just makes it so you lose control and slip with all four wheels instead of two. I don’t have a problem driving in the nasty weather, taking my sweet time, if it wasn’t for nut-jobs like those people.

Unfortunately I don’t work at home like I used to (or like Dave, who lives out in that area, does currently), but boy I sure wish I did. Wish me luck tomorrow …

Cascade Winds Symphonic Band In Concert This Weekend

It’s that time again for my every few month cheap plug for the upcoming Cascade Winds Symphonic Band Concerts. They are this weekend, Sunday, November 5th, at 2PM and Monday, November 6th, at 7:30PM. Like before (and from here on out) the concerts are going to be at the Tower Theatre in Downtown Bend. You can read more information about the concert, including the pieces we’re playing, at the Cascade Winds website, where you can also download black and white and color flyers for the event.

The event is free, and tickets are available from the Tower box office, or by calling Band Manager Yoleen at 389-2035.

I hope to see some of you there! Come up and say “hi” during intermission.

Naked Coffee Guy Set Free

Naked Coffee Guy, the dude that was terrorizing the coffee stand girls around Bend this summer and subsequently arrested, was let loose by a local judge after making a plea deal with the DA’s office. He was ordered to seek sex-offender and mental health treatment and put on probation, but no jail time was ordered.

There have been some good comments on the old entry for this in the last couple days (after his release was announced) but feel free to comment here as well.

My opinion: he’s a sick dude, and hopefully he stays the hell away from teenage girls. He probably should’ve been locked up.

Downtown “Thugs” Are Taking Over

I’ve always enjoyed the Bend Economy Blog, and this hilarious rant about the “thugs” in downtown Bend who hang out at Drake Park was priceless:

Well, I’ll tell all you worried newcomers who’ve spent your hard-borrowed money to move to an overwhelmingly white community where you thought there would be less crime, less drugs, less punks, more family values, more scenic views and quaint shops, don’t blame the Bend police! You newcomers have done nothing to help the situation (which gets worse the more of you arrive), and I have to suspect that some of them are your kids! Why didn’t you forbid them to get piercings? Why don’t you grab them by the ear and tell them to come home, get a haircut and a job?

Aside from the punks who actually commit crimes, why do you care where they hang out? I had comments like “it’s intimidating to walk through there with kids.” What are you doing, hanging out with your kids downtown at 1 in the morning? Or do you really think that a street punk is going to leap out and snatch your child from you in broad daylight in downtown Bend? Or is it just that you suddenly feel self-conscious, as a well-scrubbed yuppie emerging from your leased Volvo Cross Country with your kids to go get an ice cream at Goody’s, to be in the company of free-spirited youth who are lounging around with no apparent responsibilities?

Anybody who’s lived here for a long while — especially folks who have lived here for a long while and have kids — will appreciate this. Be sure to read the whole rant, as it’s a riot, whether you agree with it or not.

The Source Weekly’s RSS Feed

Since the auto-discovery tag on the Source’s redesigned site doesn’t quite work, if you want to sign up for their RSS feed, you’ll have to manually put the RSS feed URL into your feed reader. Here’s the URL:

http://www.tsweekly.com/index.php?option=com_rss&feed=RSS2.0&no_html=1

Now if they could just get individual feeds for their blogs, I could get them onto Bend Blogs (they’re using Joomla for their CMS, so I’m sure it’s possible).

If you’re looking for RSS feeds for other local news outlets, I posted what I knew a while back.

Central Oregon Web Professionals User Group Meets Tomorrow

I should be able to make it (might be a few minutes late as I’ll be coming straight from work), but tomorrow evening at Edge Wireless is the first meeting of the Central Oregon Web Professionals Usergroup. Jen has a post about it here, and there’s an announcement on upcoming.org. Hopefully I’ll see some of you there!
