Bend Local Telephone Prefixes

I remember back in the day when it was a long distance call to call LaPine or Redmond from Bend. You could call Sunriver, but you couldn’t call LaPine. When I lived in Bend growing up, I knew if the phone number didn’t start with 38-something (382, 385, 388, 389, and then 383 came along later) or 593, it was a long-distance call. Now that they’ve smoothed things out and deregulated things a bit, Sunriver, Redmond, LaPine, Madras, Prineville, Sisters, Culver, Gilchrist, and Camp Sherman and areas who use phone prefixes from those areas are all local phone calls from Bend. While this is a nice thing, with the area’s explosive growth and the advent of cell phones has made it stupidly confusing to keep track of local prefixes. The local phone books used to have a page for local calling with all the prefixes, but I couldn’t find it in the latest yellow page. And I couldn’t find a master list online publicly anywhere, but had a list that a local company gave me access to behind a password protected interface (I work for a client of theirs). So here you go, this is (as far as I know) all the phone prefixes (area code 541) that you can call from Bend without incurring long-distance fees. I’ll update these if anybody has any additions, but I’m mostly documenting this here for my own reference so I don’t have to log into a password-protected interface to get it.

And if there is an easy way to find this information online that I totally missed, be sure to let me know. But basically I’m creating this as a public service so that folks new to the area know what’s long distance and what’s not.

What Happened To The Bend Area Transit Web Site?

While I can’t find this in Google’s cache, Gigablast Cache, or in the Web Archive, I could’ve swore that before it made it’s official debut yesterday that the Bend Area Transit Web Site was a dedicated web site that wasn’t under the City of Bend umbrella. The other web site was blue, setup and easy to follow like their brochures, and actually looked fine in Firefox. Now it looks like crap. Did I miss something here, or am I just losing my mind? I know back when Jon linked to it the site wasn’t under the City of Bend’s domain and design.

Please somebody tell me I’m not losing it.

Before somebody asks, no, I haven’t ridden the bus yet (though a lot of people did). When it runs to Sunriver, I’ll start (I’m not holding my breath on that one), but it just doesn’t help me at all right now. Maybe if I ever start working in Bend, but that doesn’t seem possible, either (as much as I’d like it to be sometimes).

No Surprise Here: Bend Homes Are Totally Overvalued

CNN Money has rated has a story about a study that rates Bend as the second most over-valued housing market in the nation, sharing the top 10 with a bunch of California and Florida towns. Localized story on KTVZ and good discussion as well on the Bend Economy Blog.

Tell Us Something We Didn’t Know

According to a recent study, less than 20% of local jobs could provide for a family of three. For those of us that are sole-providors who are feeding a wife and two kids, I’m sure that percentage is lower (as the study says that only 19% of jobs provide a living wage for a family of four — if both parents work). To quote the article:

A Deschutes County family of three — one working adult with two children — must earn $23.14 an hour to meet basic needs, says the new report. A single worker requires at least $11.30 an hour to make a living in Deschutes County.

That’s a hair over $48,000/year. I can tell you one thing without getting into how much I make: I’m not making that much money, I’m just really frugal. I am feeding my wife and two kids, paying my bills, student/home/car loans, with quite a bit less than that, but I’m surviving — barely.

More commentary will undoubtedly appear at some point on the Bend Economy Blog (one of the best local blogs for this type of thing), but feel free to comment here.

That’s One Way Of Getting Out Of Paying Alimony

I work for a few different companies out here in Sunriver. One of them is looking for a reservationist, and has an ad on CentralOregonJobs.com. We just got a hilarious inquiry from that ad on the site. My boss isn’t here, so I have no idea if he’s going to help the guy out or not:

I’m currently engaged in court battle with my X- Wife over her continuing to receive alimony. She claims there are no jobs available close to her new home in Gilchrist so alimony must continue (6 yrs). I’ve found many jobs that I believe she is qualified to perform from this website and others. It would be extremly helpful, to my cause, to know what the qualifications were for the person you hired to fill this position. Age and education mostly.

So he’s basically trying to get out of paying alimony. Priceless.

It is a bit longer of a commute than what I have, so I don’t know how this is going to help the guy. I’d look in LaPine, if I were him, as Gilchrist is quite a ways from here.

But she probably is trying to get out of working, too. I doubt we’ll reply at all as I don’t think my boss wants to get in the middle of this.

Naked Coffee Dude Arrested

I’ve updated my original post accordingly, so read up there for the original story and on the arrest (as I’d rather keep it all in one place because it’s easier for me to keep track of things).

Just A Bit Of Advice

If you’re going to go on LimeWire to download porn to your laptop, make sure that you turn it off before you go to the office, otherwise IT personnel will find your collection that you’ve unwittingly shared with the office.

You see, LimeWire has default settings to share all files that have been successfully downloaded to all iTunes applications on the network. Anybody who is running iTunes and has their iTunes set to look for shared playlists will find your LimeWire downloads.

Whoops… .

Bend Forums Fund Raising Drive Update

You may remember the Bend Forums fund-raising drive I posted about. I won’t go into the details here, but the pledge goal for the drive has been lowered. So if you’re interested in contributing or reading more details, check them out here and view the progress and donate here.

By the way: I’ve installed a new simple but fun extension on Bend Forums so you can enable people to “Buy You A Drink” (click to give you money), as well as a few other usability tweaks.

Poles on Bend’s North End To Come Down

Actually, not all the poles are going to come down — one’s going to be left as a gigantic flag pole, according to this press release:

August 28 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Jimmy Bruce

390-6776

DATE: August 29, 2006

HEADLINE: Nets, Poles & Old Glory

BODY:

The nets and the poles will no longer be an eye sore on Bends north side. Before the snow flies, Bend’s skyline will be absent of the controversial driving range nets and poles. With one exception…the new owners wish to leave a single pole and display an American Flag. In fact we would like to dedicate this particular Flag to all of our military families here in Central Oregon. With the recent loss of Cpl. Randy Newman and Pfc. Tom Tucker we can think of no greater tribute than to recognize these men and their families.

From Redmond to LaPine and Awbrey Butte to Pilot Butte all who travel to and from this community will be reminded of those who have and are serving our country. We thank and honor those who serve.

I actually applaud not only the removal of those poles (finally) but the use of one as an American Flag pole.

The Real Best Of Bend

Like Monkey Boy, I’ve always thought that while The Source‘s “Best Of Central Oregon” awards cover some good categories of Central Oregon living, there are always something missing. So leave it to Monkey Boy to come up with something I’m sure we were all thinking: Vote for the real best of Bend, including categories such as Best Donuts, Best Roundabout to Drive In Circles, Best Time For People-Watching at Wal-Mart, Bend Central Oregon Blog, Best KTVZ Personality Not Named Bob Shaw, and more.

Vote early, and vote often.
