New York Times Comes to Bend

I think this New York Times article perfectly describes what I miss about Bend:

According to the author William Kittredge, who grew up on a ranch in southeastern Oregon, “Out West we see a society in the midst of reinventing itself.” In Bend the transformation is complete. The last of the huge sawmills closed a decade ago. In its place are a Victoria’s Secret and an outdoor amphitheater. Hardware stores are hard to find; Pilates instructors are not. In short, in Bend it is out with the old and in with the New West.

I miss the old style of this town. I miss my old hardware stores (nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing, can replace Masterson St. Claire). I miss being able to ski and golf here for less than $20 for each. I miss being able to walk through Drake Park at night and not fear for my life. I miss not having jackass neighbors. I miss my old diners. I miss my small town.

I do like some of the stuff they’re doing to Bend, some of the stores that are opening, but I can’t say that I can afford any of it. Maybe it’s just some of the elitist attitude around here that bothers me. Maybe I just need to quit my complaining and whining and go back to work. Yeah, that’s the ticket.

Wal-Mart Finally Does Something Right

If you’ve read this site long, you know my feelings about Wal-Mart, but they’re doing one thing right: They’re trying to get the major record companies to lower their prices so they can sell $10 CDs. Full Story.

Gmail Disk Drive for Windows

I already mentioned the ability to pull this off in Linux, but now somebody has made it so Gmail can appear as a drive in My Computer. Right on! Link via Waxy.

The French Have Done Something Right!

The French government is allowing cinemas, concert halls and theaters to install cell phone jammers. Now if we could just could get that to happen here in the U.S., life would be good. Full Story.

Amazing Adobe Illustrator Art

These look exactly like photos, but they’re all vector images done with Adobe Illustrator. Amazing. Link via somewhere that I forgot to note when I flagged this link a while back.

Auto Patching Windows

I actually saw this mentioned in my last Maximum PC magazine, and wanted to mention it here, mostly for bookmark purposes.

Autopatcher is an all-in-one updater for Windows 2000, XP, and 2003. If you’re sick of going to Windows Update all the time, this includes every patch and update from Windows Update as well as a pile of registry tweaks, add on software, and other cool stuff. I just plan on burning this to a CD to bring to when I do a service call, and call it good.

The same group also has an Autostreamer, which gives you a slick interface to slipstream and create a new Windows installation CDs that are updated with the latest service pack. Dang cool.

Dilbert’s Ultimate House

If I ever built my own house, and had a pile of money, I’d like to think that my house would turn out something like this. They’ve got a great deal of well done computer imagery and virtual walk throughs, as well as explanations as to why they did what they did in each room. Very cool.

eBay Misspellings Search Engine

One of the best ways to get great deals on eBay is to find mis-spellings of items on eBay — they’re hard to find, so the prices are stupidly low. This search engine makes it a ton easier. The search uses the guy’s eBay affiliate ID so he can make a few bucks (which is only fair), but he does off an affiliate-free version.

Conan to Replace Leno in 2009

Honestly, I’ve always enjoyed Conan O’Brien far more than Jay Leno (Conan’s written some great Simpson’s episodes, which is just one more reason to respect the guy), and I’m glad to hear that in 2009, Leno will step down and let Conan take over. Link via Waxy.

Update: Good article and commentary on this announcement posted here.
