Way Behind…

I vowed this last weekend (took a three day weekend after taking yesterday off) to avoid my laptop completely and not check my email or get online so I could spend more time with my wife and kids. I already had several concerts to play at (with one more tonight) so I was already busy and just decided to keep the laptop bagged up (though I did play some more Nintendo DS, getting up to world five in Mario Bros.).

I boot up this morning and went to get some caffeine while my email and RSS feeds download. After my spam filters did their dirty work, I had 790 new e-mail messages and well over 1000 unread RSS items. Ugh…

So if you e-mailed me over the last few days and are awaiting a reply, I’ll get to your e-mail — eventually.

NEED: Percussionists in Bend Who Can Read Sheet Music

As many of you know, I’m a percussionist (fancy word for a drummer who can read sheet music) and have played in the Cascade Winds and the Central Oregon Symphony for about 13 years. It’s been a fun experience. In recent years with our new director, we’ve gotten some pieces in the band that have really featured the percussion or have at least had hard percussion parts. While we’re never really at a need for percussionists in the symphony (the pieces in there don’t feature us much), we always seem to be short in the band, and this term is no exception.

I’ve heard much of the term from various folks in the band that this person or that person is going to show up, but it’s never materialized. So I’m making the open call here: If you’re a percussionist in the area with some concert band experience, the we’d love to have you. We only have three rehearsals left until our concerts. Right now, we have three percussionists and could ideally use six as currently the three of us are trying to cover the parts for six or more players on a couple of our pieces. The music is tough, and if you can’t read in anything other than common 4/4 time, you’re in trouble here, but if you have some experience and want to play some great music, this is the place. That, and it’d be really nice if I wasn’t trying to read off three parts and jumping around like a maniac (on one piece, I have the timpani, snare drum, suspended cymbal, triangle, and bass drum all wrapped around me — I’m basically trying to cover three parts, and it’s a royal pain in the butt).

Ideally, we’d love for you to stick around next term as well so if we do get enough people we can play the percussion ensemble I mentioned a long while ago.

If you have any questions at all, contact me via my contact form on the right column of the page or comment below.

Holy Crap, I’ve Been Busy

Between buying stuff for my sweetheart of a wife (it‘s tomorrow, guys) to a crapload of work at my day job along with three concerts and two rehearsals, my week is going to be a mess (and it’s only Tuesday, and it’s already chaos). On the bright side, I got a new cell phone, so that’s always nice — too bad I haven’t had any time to play with it.

Meanwhile, I’ve been collecting links as usual, so to get some of them out of my link dump folder, here are a bunch of fun YouTube videos (after the jump).

“Why Is My Fan So Loud?”

I do a lot of tech support during my day job, handling all sorts of random problems. I’ve posted about various spyware removal jobs I’ve had to do, along with the various other problems that I’ve had to deal with (among others). But I always get a laugh at conversations like these.

Co-worker: My computer’s really loud.

Me:: The sound is really loud or the computer itself?

Co-worker: The computer — sounds like a jet engine.

Me:: I’ll come by in a minute.

As I’m walking down to her office, I know it’s probably a fan in the system that’s making noise. Generally, noisy fans that weren’t noisy before means one of a few thing:

  • The fan is going bad.
  • There’s something hitting the blades of the fan (loose wires or something).
  • Or the system is overheating and the system’s temperature sensor is kicking the speed of the fans up to cool things off (common in the Dell systems that this person had).

I hear her computer fan the minute I walk in the office, and it sounds like the thing is heating up. I open up task manager on the system, just to make sure something hasn’t been stuck using 100% of the CPU power for an hour, and it’s sitting at 99% idle. So I reach down under the woman’s desk too look at the system to check the fan blades, and it’s hot to the touch. Then I notice the space heater sitting next to her desk, turned off.

Me: Were you using this this morning? (It was below freezing this morning out here…)

Co-worker: Yeah, it was cold in the office this morning.

Me:: Where was the space heater when you were running it?

Co-worker: Underneath my desk.

Me:: Right next to your computer?

Co-worker: Yes — was that the problem?

So basically, she was cooking her computer — the plastic on the front of the Dell probably would’ve melted had it run too much longer.

So I shut the computer down and opened up the case door to get some cooler air in there and told her to not turn it on again for at least 10 minutes (or until she didn’t feel any heat on the side panels, which were hot to the touch). And if she wanted to use the space heater again, she needed to run it from a different outlet, away from her desk.

Stupidly Handy Windows Applications (and FireFox extensions, too)

I can’t believe I didn’t find Taskbar Shuffle a lot earlier, as I’ve always wanted the ability to rearrange my taskbar buttons like I do with my Firefox tabs.

Then I realized something: I have a ton of small little applications installed that make my windows experience a heck of a lot more entertaining, usable, and flexible, and all of them are free. And I’ve never documented them all in one place, so I’m going to make the attempt here (mostly so I can remember these in the future should my computer ever go haywire). These are in no particular order, and this post has been several weeks in the making.

Full list after the jump.

Need: Old (Small) USB Key

Does anybody have an old eight megabyte or larger USB key/thumbdrive/Flash Drive that you want to get rid of (yes, that’s all I need)? The floppy drive on a ZoneCD server I have setup is caput so I’ve moved the configuration information to a much more reliable USB Key. The problem is, all you can buy locally is 512 megabyte keys that are more expensive and all I really need is about one megabyte. Right now, my 512 meg key is there, and I’d really like to get it back.

Anybody have an old low capacity one that they got from a trade show or something that they just want to get rid of? Comment here using your email address and I’ll get back to you.

I’m A Good Dad, But Not A Hair Stylist

My wife had to head out of town today for a funeral (she’s on the pass right now where chains are required), so I took the day off work to watch over the kids. I’m a good dad, and can handle this without issue, but I am a man, and I’ll be the first to admit: I suck at doing a little girl’s hair.

I have no problem with every other motherly duty — making lunches, getting the kids ready, picking out clothes, cleaning up the house, playing with our little one, running errands, etc… . But I’m downright horrible at getting a little girl’s hair so it doesn’t look horrible. Luckily my seven-year-old will hold still long enough for me to get it right, and her little pony tails came out fine (eventually). My three-year-old, on the other hand, was a bit more of a handful. Mommy’s good at it. She can throw her down and get her hair styled, even braided, in a matter of seconds it seems. Me, I managed to get her hair out of her face by bribing her with watching Dora The Explorer where she would at least be in one place long enough for me to do it. I suck.

Ah the joys of parenthood …

What a Day…

I was going to post something about all this last night, but I was too dang tired, but yesterday was just a rotten day. After my near death experience in the morning (OK, that’s exaggerating just a tad), my evening just made the day that much better. As I tried to start my car last night to start my drive home, my car wouldn’t start. I tried getting it jumped, but that didn’t help. I grabbed my electrical tester, and the battery had plenty of juice, so that wasn’t the problem. There was just no power to the car from it — no cab lights, head lights, etc… . I inspected all the connectors that I could see, and they all looked fine, but it was 15 degrees outside (well below freezing), and I didn’t want to stand there in the cold removing and reconnecting cables. So I called AAA, and they said they could make it there in about an hour and 15 minutes. So I just hung out at the office until close to the time they were supposed to get out there. A maintenance guy from the other company I work at saw my car and stopped by. He’s not a car guy either, but in all his infinite wisdom, he tries just smacking my battery with his wrench.

And my car lit up. Figures the primitive method would get the thing fired up. It took me about an hour to drive home after that, but he at least followed me to Bend because he did live in town.

So then I’m putting a round in our woodstove — our primary source of heat — for the night. As I was shutting the door, the round rolled back and got in the way as I was shutting the door. Now I have a nice crack or five in the woodstove glass — which I’m sure will cost a pretty penny to replace. Great.

Anybody know anybody locally who can replace woodstove glass for a reasonable price? Many glass shops I’ve dealt with in the past don’t the ceramic glass that’s used in woodstoves (and I probably need the gasket replaced, too.

My Commute Sucks

My job is fine. It pays the bills, I work with nice people, make decent money, it’s secure, etc… but the one thing I hate about my job more than anything is actually getting to the office on a daily basis. Especially on days like this.

Complaining about my commute is nothing new on this site. I drive from the north east side of Bend to Sunriver every day. Usually takes me about 40 minutes to do it, 30 on a clear sunny day (hit the parkway and go). It’s been raining in Bend for the last 24 hours or so, and then it dropped below freezing last night so all that rain turned to ice. However, it kept snowing south of Bend (high elevation) so there was basically two or three inches of snow on top of the skating rink that Highway 97 has become south of Lava Butte. And the highway is already horribly dangerous in that area, narrowing down into one narrow southbound lane from two and being further narrowed by the amount of snow on the road.

This is a stretch of highway that people generally drive way too fast, especially in the Winter. There are a lot of tourists and others who have never driven in the snow, and SUV owners who think they can easily drive 65+MPH on a 55MPH road that’s covered with ice. As I was approaching where the road narrows up to one lane, I was going maybe 30MPH (at the most) as were all the cars in front of me. I look up in my rear-view window and see a small SUV (little Isuzu or something) with skis on top rapidly approaching me (going at least 60). I could see him getting closer and closer, and meanwhile I’m trying to find a place to bail out in case he can’t stop. At the last minute, he finally looks up from his cell phone and slams on his brakes, nearly flying off the road. Then he proceeds to tailgate me all the way to the Sunriver turnoff (about three miles down the road). I couldn’t pull off to let him by without endangering myself further.

And then the real fun started. They’re building a new cloverleaf interchange at the intersection of South Century Drive (the main Sunriver turn off) and the highway. It’s a mess down there right now, and turning off into Sunriver is even more dangerous than before until the construction is completed. I proceed to make the right-hand turn as slow as my car will go, get it turned at the 90° angle, and my car continues to slide. It slid about eight feet before coming to a stop literally three inches from a large pickup truck. So I thankfully didn’t hit him, but I was rattled quite a bit. But as I spent a few seconds gaining my senses there are getting shaken up, jackass SUV boy that was tailgating me for the last few miles whips by me, and proceeds to drive 70+ towards the mountain.

That stretch of road is so nasty, and if I could have this same job in Bend, I’d be a lot less stressed out. That interchange that will (in theory) make that area a bit safer can not come soon enough.

And as I was writing this entry, we just got a phone call from a Realtor at our office here, who said there’s a truck Jack-knifed at the intersection where I nearly hit the pickup. I don’t see anything on TripCheck yet, but apparently the highway’s been closed.

Morals of this story? If you have an SUV, that doesn’t give you any right to haul butt down the road. Two, drive carefully out there, as it’s a mess.

Is anybody else going to fall asleep before Midnight tonight?

I probably will. I’m not a huge fan of the fanfare around this holiday for a variety of reasons (some personal ones that I’m not going to go into here), but mostly I haven’t slept well for a couple of weeks. I’ll probably just play with my new DS Lite a bit (haven’t had a chance to play with it much) and then crash well before midnight. I have to work tomorrow, so that’s a partial motivator. So we’re just having a couple friends over to play some board games, and then I’m probably going to crash.

Anybody else going to fall asleep before midnight?

Regardless, I hope everybody has a happy and safe holiday, and please, please, please call a cab if you’ve had more than a couple drinks. I don’t care how coherent you think you are and how fine you think you’ll be, you won’t end up hurting yourself, you’ll hurt somebody else (read between the lines there and you’ll know why I’m not a huge fan of the holiday).

Here are the local numbers for the local taxi companies. Print them up and bring them with you wherever you party tonight (all area code 541 if you’re from out of town reading this):

  • Bend Cab Co: 389-8090
  • City Cab: 385-3304
  • Owl Taxi: 382-3311
  • Redmond Taxi: 548-1182
  • Yellow Cab Co.: 330-1600

And remember, it’s better safe than sorry.
