It’s official: There’s a site for everything.

Flash Time Killer For The Day
It’s a promotion for Hostway, but I have to admit, I had a lot of fun exploring Bob’s Cube. There’s a few Office Space references, and lots of little nooks and crannies to check out (the rear view mirror is funny).
City Of Bend To Start Renaming Streets
Let me tell you, this can’t happen soon enough. While I’ve lived here long enough to know where the various streets change names, trying to explain it to people from out of town is damn near impossible, especially now that the parkway has split many of them in weird spots or connected them in others.
They plan on starting off small and just dealing with Hill Street, but Bond street is a mess of names, as is the Portland-Olney-Penn-Neff-Alfalfa Market stretch of road (the Bulletin story forgot Penn in that combo), the 8th-Trenton-12th road that runs up the Butte, the Hwy. 20-Greenwood-Newport-Shevlin Park road, etc… . There are even two or three little weird ones in my neighborhood alone (Jones turns into 12th, and Jones heads off on a completely separate road, for example).
Google Satellite Maps
Google Maps has gotten that much cooler. Google has integrated wonderful satellite imagery into both it’s Maps and Local products. It’s pretty dang slick, and Greg shows some samples of its power.
Note that I had trouble with the zoom in Firefox 1.01, but after upgrading to 1.02, it all works fine and dandy.
Update at 1:45: Here’s a cool flickr group that shows Google images of people’s childhood homes (inspired by this). There’s also links to the Burning Man Camp site as well as a field in Illinois that says “Dave.” Thanks Waxy.
Good Photography Articles
For all of you photographers out there, here’s a couple good article that I’ve had flagged and haven’t had a chance to post.
- How To Edit Your Photos Like A Pro. Most of it is common sense for somebody who has done any photo editing, but it’s still a good article.
- Quit Fethishizing Your Equipment. A good article that explains why I’ll always be shooting with my old manual Canon AE1: Your equipment will give you better images. Your eye for a good image and your abilities as a photographer will give you good images. A great photographer could shoot equally as well on brand spanking new digitals as they can on the old classics (I own one of those old classics — it’s a great camera).
The World’s Fastest Train
Cruising at a cool 220mph, this looks like a fun ride. Too bad the ride is only 20 miles long (<teacher>which would take how long, class?</teacher>).
Never Miss A TV Show
All you need is Bittorrent and RSS. It’s like a Tivo for folks who are poor but have broadband.
Great Firefox Tips/Hacks
If you’re not using Firefox, you’re really missing out. Here’s a great K5 run-down that lists some great hacks and plugins you can install on it to make it work exactly how you want it to (there were several plugins on there that I have never heard of, but now have installed). The coolest thing I hadn’t seen before are these performance-tuned builds of Mozilla products that take advantage of the extra instructions on modern processors. I’ve installed one of them, and it works pretty slick.
And I don’t care how fancy IE 7.0 is supposed to be, I doubt I’ll install it (actually, I will, but only for testing purposes).
Amazing Game Movies
Granted, most of these were done with emulators and other tricks that enabled this type of speed, but it’s still amazing to see the speed at which people complete old-school NES games.
