Oddball — Yet Fascinating — Research

How somebody thought of this as a research topic, I have no idea, but this is a fascinating 75-page read on the topic of Candy Bar Wrapper design.

Short Time Only Fun Downloads

As you can see by this lenghty forum thread, my old server, which is supposed to be up until the end of the month, will be suffering some downtime in a couple days thanks to the actions of a poorly-managed webhost who bought out my former host. I’ve long since moved my sites (including this one) to a new server, so this site won’t go down. Since I’m primarily using the old server for storage, and it’s paid through the end of the month, I’m going to mirror some stuff there that I’ve had sitting on my hard drive that I think is pretty funny. If you have a file that you want mirrored there or a funny video you want me to plop there, let me know.

Note that these links could go down at any time, so don’t whine to me if it doesn’t work. They should, in theory, be up at least for another six days. Have fun downloading, and share the links (I’ve got about 75 gigs to kill in six days).

That’s all for now, more to come later if I get any submissions or find anything else on my hard drive that I feel like posting. Like I said, these links will probably die in a few days, so enjoy them while you can.

Again, let me be clear: UtterlyBoring.com is not going anywhere. I’m on a new, meaty server with a good Web host, and I’m just trying to take advantage of some extra space and bandwidth that I have sitting there unused elsewhere.

Update at 3:30: Apparently the old server is down for one reason or another. I’ve got a support ticket in there, as I’m paid through the month and I’d better get my month’s worth, so we’ll see. I’ll keep you posted.

Update at 3:50: Old server appears to be running again. Don’t know what was going on.

Update on 3/26 @ 1:00: The old server were taken down yesterday, as planned, but it’s not back up in the 11 hours like they planned — it’s going on 18 now. There’s a nice thread over at Web Hosting Talk about this whole mess. Hopefully everybody will be able to download again in a few hours.

Update on 3/27 at 7:00am: Looks like things are back up again — 48 hours (or more) later. Idiots. Boy am I glad I don’t have to deal with those morons.

Simpson’s Chalkboard Archive

This is why I love The Simpsons (at least the older episodes). During the opening credits, something is always different. They end with a different couch scene, and begin with Bart writing something different on the chalkboard for punishment. Now the latter have been archived here for your viewing pleasure.

Best Use Of Amazon Web Services I’ve Seen

This is the coolest use of Amazon Web Services I’ve seen: Type in a phrase, and it will construct an image displaying your text using covers of books, music, videos, etc… . Give it a whirl. Click on a cover for more details on the book to purchase the book, making him a few pennies as well.

As an example, here’s dang near every PHP book in existence, constructing the letters “PHP”. Click on a title to get more information, reviews, etc… . Very impressive!

Winnie From Wonder Years Is A Math Geek

I remember The Wonder Years and remember all it’s characters and the show really well. What’s more entertaining to me is what the folks from the show are doing now. While Fred Savage is still doing lame acting jobs, Winnie and Paul are doing well with themselves. Paul Pfeiffer, was played by Josh Saviano, and he’s now a Yale-educated lawyer. And Danica McKellar, the girl who played Winnie Cooper, now has her own Web site, went off to college to study math (will even answer your math questions) and did some very advanced study. While she’s gotten back into acting, she still considers math one of her passions.

<dude>Geek girls are hot, man.</dude>

On a related note, pulled from this MeFi thread, apparently Dolph Lundgren has masters degree in chemical engineering and was awarded a scholorship to MIT. Who knew? Or that Dexter Holland (lead singer for The Offspring) has a Ph. D in Molecular Biology. It is nice to read about smart celebs now and again.

Ransom Note Generator

Here’s a couple neat little toys that allow you to create ransom-note-like bits of text. One uses Yahoo!’s image search, another that uses Flickr. If you truly want a secure note for your kidnapping, use both.

Addicting Flash Game For The Day

A simple game: Rotate a square on the grid, start a reaction, see how big of one you can make. My best is 1,246, 1,657 can you beat it?

Update: Updated my high score, but I’m still nowhere near some of the folks in the comments.

Amazing Puppet Work

A singing, dancing, rock and roll skeleton. This is just cool very impressive, and beats anybody (or anything) I’ve ever seen on the street. Read on to see the video (Warning: It’s a big file, and since I don’t have a Windows Media Server, it’ll have to download the whole thing at 18-megs first).

College Is Great

Where else can you spend countless hours on an elaborate machine that does a ton, but accomplishes absolutely nothing? Check out this cool project, reminiscent of Honda’s Cog commercial. Link via b3ta.

I’ve Found A Future Career

In one Indian city, authorities have hired a pile of drummers to annoy homeowners who are overdue on their property tax into paying up.

Speaking of annoying drummers, there’s one more concert tonight.
