You can tell Bend is becoming a big city when you hear about made-for-Hollywood crimes like this:
A father and son visiting from Southern California have been arrested in the violent hit-and-run death of a Bend woman who was riding her bicycle on Third Street early Tuesday, along with the torching of the suspect car in the woods south of town, police said Wednesday.

Christopher George Goodson, 22, of El Cajon, Calif., was found allegedly hiding in a northeast Bend apartment late Tuesday night. He faces charges of second-degree manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, second-degree assault second-degree conspiracy to commit arson, reckless driving and reckless endangering, said Bend police Capt. Jim Porter.
George Harold Goodson, 51, of San Diego, who had reported the car stolen, was arrested and accused of hindering prosecution and first-degree attempted aggravated theft, Porter said.
Why somebody was riding their bike down Third Street at 2:30 AM is beyond me, but she’s certainly not violating any laws by doing so unless she wasn’t wearing any reflective clothing or lights or she was drunk, but I digress.
But basically (and all allegedly, of course) from what I’m reading, here’s how I see this all went down: The son, driving daddy’s Benz, drove like a maniac through town, clobbered this woman and apparently dismembered her according to the report on KFXO last night. Despite the heavy amount of damage to the car and obviously to the woman, the guy decides to get the hell out of there, tells daddy about the mess, daddy says dispose of the car. So they drive the car out southeast of town, set it on fire (completely torching it), daddy reports it stolen from the La Quinta Inn in South Bend parking lot, obviously lying to police officers. Luckily somebody tipped the police off, and they had a statement from somebody that was allegedly riding with the suspect, so they were able to trace it back to an apartment on Full Moon Ct. (just about a mile at most from my house), where they found the alleged driver, along with “a large quantity of cocaine, weight scales, a large quantity of cash and a loaded firearm.” Drug-related charges haven’t been filed yet.
Wow. Sounds like a movie script to me, but it was the reality.
And to throw some Flamebait out there, these people are tourists and/or transplants. From California.

According to The Bulletin, the woman was riding a black bicycle in the middle of the night wearing jeans, a blue jacket, a black sweathshirt, no reflective material and no helmet. This doesn’t excuse the alleged actions of those arrested.
I hear that there was markings of what could have been a helmet in the spray paint at the scene.
Yeah, I was wondering what kind of person would be riding at 2:30am totally dark with no gear either… it’s weird. Not as bad as the killer, but weird nonetheless.
Yeah, again, the woman was probably not supposed to be riding like she was, but that certainly doesn’t excuse what these two did.

Everyone has made a “dumb mistake”. But when that mistake includes body parts flying off of your car, and you don’t fess up and instead, torch the evidence?
That “mistake” becomes a “lie”, which in turn becomes “a felony”.

He has made “mistakes” before as well (quote from The Bulletin): Christopher Goodson has been arrested multiple times in California, Dugan continued, was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon in 2004 and has a juvenile history.
PS: Amber, acknowledging that the Mercedes was paid for with cash… well… not many 22-year-olds pay cash for a luxury car in legitimate ways. Know what I’m saying?
Especially when you read the following quote from The Bulletin: “Christopher Goodson, who had a visible injury to his forehead at Wednesday’s hearing, said he was having money problems and asked for a public defender to represent him.”
And you’re probably right about his father not having cash:
“On his application for an appointed lawyer, George Goodson wrote that he is currently out of work, said Deschutes County Circuit Court Judge Barbara Haslinger.
“He shows absolutely no income whatsoever,” Haslinger said. “I have no idea how he is paying his bills. His form shows expenses but no income.”

Regardless of how you feel about the Goodsons, I think Ms. Renee probably has enough stress in her life right now. Why don’t we show some compassion for a girl whose guy is in deep trouble.

You know the woman killed had three kids, she couldn’t sleep so she rode her bike. The intersection is visible and if Goodson had been going within the speed limit he would have seen her and be able to avoid her, instead of her body parts scattering the rode and it taking the police all day to identify her. It was a horrible accident and he should pay for what he did.

I am family of both of the men involved. Christopher is a great young man. Yes he has had troubles, but who hasn’t. I am not justifying it by any means what he did. But let me set the record straight.
His father has been on disability, he just got a settlement. That is where the money factors in. So all of you can stop with your assumptions that its something illegal. Its not. His father is a very messed up man. Anyone who would tell their kid to do such a thing has to be. The apartment was not Chris’. IT was Eric Brown’s. Read the stories. It was also eric’s drugs and guns. Eric also is the one that torched the car, along with Robert.
I do not condone the actions of Christopher, but he was in total shock. The lady came out of NO WHERE. Thats what happens when people ride their bike in the MIDDLE of the road late at night with all dark clothing and no reflectors. I am not blaming the woman. But you need to understand that Chris was not driving recklass, he was not out to harm anyone. He had an accident, if he would have stayed at the scene it would have been just that and no charges would have been filed. But he fled by the guise of his own father. We all make mistakes in our lives. Some greatly larger than others. Some public, some private. But its what is was, a mistake. Chris is not a bad person, he does not do drugs, he does not seek out people to kill. He is a great young man that made a mistake.

I don’t like any sentence that starts with “You guys.” Most of the Oregonians I’ve met have been friendly and fair and judge people on their merits, not their place of birth. San Diego and Los Angeles have a steady influx of people from out of the country, and it changes the way of life. Not everybody likes that.
Same thing here, only our influx is from California, and it’s changing the way of life here. Then the people here who get priced out of the market become an influx someplace else, where they get treated like outsiders.
It’d be nice if all sides would just take a breath, stop casting stones, and stick to the known facts. One for all, and all for one, right? 😉

I’m sorry but I don’t think that you know much about your family. Chris did do drugs, he was doing drugs that night. I know for 100% fact. I also know 100% fact that he was deeply deeply involved in drugs in Bend, that’s what he was doing here. Unfortunately, I have friends that got way too close to this whole scene. You should probably know your facts before defending.

It is REALLY sad how something can happen to a family and yet be forgotten by everyone else around so quickly. Kim was my cousin. Our families have lost touch over the years, but she was still family.
Everyone tossing around blame as to whether she was in the wrong for being on her bike at that time or anything else need to step back and realize that these guys were in the wrong for what happened at that moment and in the HOURS to follow. I read one article that said Christopher had fallen asleep around 5am…….HOW CAN YOU SLEEP AFTER KILLING SOMEONE??? Right……..drugs and alcohol!!!!

Just read this after a few years. Obviously people had no clue of what the truth was. The family made sure Christopher’s Father didn’t make it either. What’s the difference in one loss compared to the other. He has to deal with the events that happened and the death of his Dad. His Fathers death is still questioned. Was it accidental or forced?
