This is so hilarious, but it’s absolutely true: If men see something to aim at in the urinal, like a bug, they will try to hit it with their stream (admit it guys, we’ve all done it). So it stands to reason that if you permanently embed said target into the actual urinal, you could save yourself a bunch of cleaning costs as there’s less spillage. That’s what they did at the Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam by etching a little fly into the bowl, and they claim it has reduced spillage by 80%.

What? This is news? Everywhere I go in the Netherlands flies are etched into the bowl. It obviously works, because not only does it draw your attention, but you automatically aim at it.
We’ve got them at the Utrecht University and they’ve got some of the cleanest restrooms I know. And I can also say first-hand that Schiphol is spick and span!
I would have thought it was an American invention, but I guess we made something practical for a change.
Now I have to figure out etching so that my boys will stop trying to write their names on the floor, wall, and shower curtain.
Don’t forget the snow, Wendy. It’s really cool and your name stays there for a while 😉
I saw that and thought it was a little sticker. Whatever it was, it worked. I tried my hardest to get the sticker to come off, without any luck.
