I Need A New Laptop Bag

As I mentioned before, I’m getting a new laptop, and I’ll probably need a new laptop bag for it (as it’s slightly larger than the one I have, and the one I have barely fits in there now). That being said, this is one bag I will never buy.

Mythbusters Lost Experiments

Yes, I know this link has made it around the Web a few times lately, but I know many folks reading this may not have seen it. Hilarious videos of moments you’ll never see on the show.

The History Of The BASIC and C Programming Languages

You really have to be a geek to appreciate some of the humor here, but the history of BASIC and the C family of languages.

Never Believe Anything You Read At Auction News Sites

BBspot, a great geek satirical news site, wrote a satirical story about eBay implementing a one-click bidding feature. I mean, I have a hard time believing that people can read stuff like this…

Users like Harold Sweiss have been ecstatic about the new feature. “I’ve been trying to purchase a copy of Vanilla Ice’s To The Extreme on vinyl for several years, but I kept getting outbid at the last minute. But now, with one-click bidding, I finally got my prized possession, and I only had to pay $1,454,248.23!”

…and still take the article seriously. Or maybe they just didn’t make it that far.

Just the same, the article was quoted as a news source in not only one, but two articles (screenshot of the latter in case it goes down).

Sorry Mailing List Readers

Add another to my to-do list when I move to a new server: turn off the automated sending of mailings from the old server. This has been fixed, so you won’t be receiving duplicates any more.

Server Move Notes For Myself

This is just mostly just random notes for myself, after yesterday’s server move, so when/if I have to do this again, I don’t miss these things.

  • Make sure that php.ini is edited to have “register_globals” turned on, otherwise it totally screws up Sunray’s site.
  • Make sure your root password for your old server doesn’t have a “+” sign in it as it totally screws up cPanel’s account transfer functions.
  • Make sure you get rid of the zerobyte “/etc/eximmailtrap” file, as it conflicts with e-mail form scripts.
  • Don’t rebuild Apache with SNMP support (at least not via cPanel) as it won’t build in curl.
  • You need to manually setup hard-coded DNS subdomains, as cPanel’s transfer functions always seem to miss them unless they were created with cPanel.
  • Fix Sunray’s internal server so it only allows logins from the new IP address.
  • Symlink pico to nano (ln -s /usr/bin/nano /usr/bin/pico) so you don’t keep typing “pico” and wondering why it’s not working (yes, I’m not one of the cool kids, and I don’t use vi, emacs, or whatever else all you punks use).
  • Added on 1/21: Make sure CRON jobs on old server are turned off so this doesn’t happen.
  • More to come, I’m sure…

Feel free to contribute below if you can think of any gotchas that you’ve run into before.

My New Toy

Ken isn’t the only spoiled little b***h — I’m getting a new toy, too (even though Ken has far more toys than any of us).

My toy? Actually, not my new toy as the company is paying for it, but I’m getting a new laptop — a Sager NP5320V model. I’ve had good luck with Sager’s systems, and am typing this on an older one that I’ve been using for a few years.

Why a Sager? It’s a poorly-kept secret in the laptop industry that the bulk majority of laptops sold out there under a variety of names are made by just a handful of companies and rebranded slightly (kind of like kitchen appliances). Clevo makes all the laptops for Hypersonic, Voodoo, Sager, Alienware (at least they used to), and Mtech (among others). The one thing that’s nice about buying it from Sager is they usually have the newer technology from Clevo, and their prices are always far cheaper (and since I have a reseller account with them, they’re even cheaper than the public price).

So here’s some basic specs on the laptop I’m getting for about $150 less than their publicly available price:

  • 15.4″ WUXGA Active Matrix LCD Display Display
  • Intel® Pentium® M Processor 760 / 2MB L2 Cache, 2.0GHz, 533MHz FSB
  • 1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz
  • ATI Mobility Radeon X700 PCI-Express 16X Graphics with 256MB DDR Video Memory
  • 80.0GB (SATA 7200rpm) SATA 150 Hard Drive
  • 8X Dual Layer DVD Burner ± R/RW
  • Windows XP Pro
  • Built in wireless, gigabit ethernet, media reader, video camera, firewire, USB 2.0, etc

It’s on order and should be here soon, and then I get to start installing all my toys and then I get to get down to real work of making this site into a rockin’ site.

Update: By the way, if anybody wants something from Sager, let me know and I’ll sell it to you at my cost.

Server Move Coming, Comments Off

I’m temporarily turning off comments on this site so I can move it to a new server. I’ll reopen them and update this entry when the server move is complete.

Update: If you’re reading this, the server move was complete. I’ll be enabling comments (and posting more details) later.

Update again: All my sites have been moved to this box, which is less crowded than the last one. More details to come down the road as to why I needed a seperate box. Bugs have been worked out (had to tweak some PHP configurations, but nothing too exciting). Comments will be enabled in a couple minutes (though I have enjoyed the silence).

Somebody Had Some Serious Munchies

I think the picture in this story says it all:

KLAMATH FALLS – Two Klamath Falls 19-year-olds and two juveniles were arrested by Oregon State Police, who found about $1,000 worth of stolen chips, beef jerky, sunflower seeds and dip stuffed in their car’s trunk and rear seat. The trooper allegedly caught the four unloading snacks from the second of two delivery vans they stole.

That’s some serious munchies, man…

Thanks Barn for the link.

Want To Make A Few Bucks?

If anybody locally is looking for work, read on, as I’ve gotten wind of a few jobs (some freelance, some full time) around here that might interest some folks.

  • The company I work for is looking for a full-time front desk reservationist. It’s a fast-paced vacation rental company in Sunriver (it’s actually fairly slow right now, but we’re trying to get people on and trained before it gets crazy later this year). The people here are great and a fun bunch to work for. It’s a small, family run company, and the sooner we hire somebody, the sooner I can quit working the front desk and get to the rest of my projects [grin]. Anyway, to copy our Bulletin ad copy, you must be able to prioritize, have outstanding communication skills, strong work ethic, exceptional customer service and basic computer knowledge. Must be willing to work weekends. Shifts will vary from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. $9.00 hour, will vary based on qualifications. Complete application at Sunray Vacation Rentals, 56890 Venture Lane, Sunriver, OR 97707, or mail resume to P.O. Box 4518, Sunriver, OR 97707. You may also e-mail resume to [email protected].
  • Another Sunriver vacation rental company (who shall remain nameless right now, but I’m good friends with the owner and it’s a company we work with quite a bit) is looking for a marketing/Web person. They’re not looking for a die-hard computer geek, as they have that, but they’re looking for a person who knows a lot about Web and print marketing and design, and can troubleshoot minor technical issues if need be. If you’re remotely interested, e-mail me at [email protected] and I’ll put you in contact with the right people.
