A Monster Killing Machine

While the site’s not in English, many of the comments are in English. The commentors say the machine in the picture (below, in case the site disappears) appears to be a gigantic saw used in coal mining:

It’s one scary thing, that’s for sure. In the comments there were links to other sites that show pics of this and other huge mining machines here, here, and here.

Jon says:

Man, I look at that thing and I can’t help but think of Half-Life for some reason…

Neil T. says:

Don’t know if it’s what you intended, but the image doesn’t show in Bloglines. I’m guessing you’re doing some anti-hotlinking thing.
Still… scary.

Matt A says:

I saw that thing on the discovery channel. It’s used for strip mining. What looks like a saw blade in the front is actually a large rotating scoop (clockwise from this angle). The scoop is supposed to be about 30 meters in diameter. It’s absurd, I wish I could remember the number of tons of material this thing can move in a day so I could let you guys know. I don’t want to just guess from a several month old memory.

Matt A says:

Wow, I’m such a tool. Jake’s first link under the picture has all the tech info.

Jake says:

Yes, Neil, I have image blocking. See this link. I am considering removing it now that I’m a meatier server.

Giant Machinery

This is one cool machine. Language geek aside: This site appears to be in Finnish. How do I know that? It looks like Tolkien’s Elvish. Via Utterly Boring….

we are doing a school project kinda a debate thing we are for it and we have to come up with reasons why its safe we’d appriaciate any help about it

Steve says:

The machine in question is what is known as a bucket wheel excavator. Mainly used in Germany although there are a few used in the copper mines. Unlike most mining machines they have a hard time breaking up tough soil therefore they are used where the earth is soft which makes the earth easier to move.
