Conan to Replace Leno in 2009

Honestly, I’ve always enjoyed Conan O’Brien far more than Jay Leno (Conan’s written some great Simpson’s episodes, which is just one more reason to respect the guy), and I’m glad to hear that in 2009, Leno will step down and let Conan take over. Link via Waxy.

Update: Good article and commentary on this announcement posted here.

L.A. to New York in 4 Minutes

This is one of those mesmerizing time-lapse videos that I could just have running all the time as wall-paper. And it’s fun to watch, too, because it’s not just a simple drive, but there’s other plot twists in the whole thing. Link via b3ta.

Fast Fingered Percussion

I’m a percussionist with both the Cascade Winds and the CO Symphony, and I can truly appreciate well-done percussion and talented percussionists. For example, check out the videos of the folks here, as there is some very impressive work there.

Occassionally when I’m at big department store, I’ll play with those keyboards that have drum noises and such associated with some of the keys. I can never play those keys like I can a real set of drums, as it’s just too small and difficult and my hands don’t work that well. Then I saw this video link in the latest b3ta newsletter, and was blown away. The video is of a guy playing percussion on the Prodikeys keyboard — a combo dual computer with computer and MIDI piano keys — and it’s damn impressive.

The State Of The Computing Industry

We really need to a) Beat virus writers and spammers senseless and b) take people offline that don’t know how to keep their computer locked down (or buy them all Macs). There are some scary stats here:

  • Spam exceeded 70% of all e-mail in July 2004 (60% of which is being sent by infected zombie machines)
  • About 1 in 12 e-mails carried viruses in the first six months of 2004
  • There are now 1,740 known, unpatched security flaws in Windows and other operating systems
  • More than 1,974 unique phishing attacks were reported in July 2004
  • In surveys, 74% of users whose PCs are running adware from Claria (formerly Gator) said they had no knowledge of it being installed.

The above article mentions a pile of ways to protect yourself (which are pretty common sense for most geeks), as well as backs up those claims with research.

If That Isn’t Ironic

Honey, I’m Home

Have a pile of links to post over the next couple days, will get to them later. Meanwhile, we had a good trip to the coast — beautiful sunny day on Friday — and enjoyed the weekend. But I do know that I’m not going on a trip with a one-year-old again — ever. While she was generally pretty good, we had to keep an eye on her all the time. My grandparents live right on Hwy. 101 on the Oregon coast, and if we weren’t watching her, she would’ve bolted onto the highway. One thing’s for sure, we’re not going anywhere until she’s older. We needed this vacation, needed a break, etc… . It was certainly nice to get out of the house, that’s for sure. I’m not entirely looking forward to going back to work tomorrow, but what are you going to do — the bills have to be paid after all.

Back to regular blogging tomorrow after I get through all my e-mail and RSS feeds.

Heading Out For A Vacation

No blogging until Sunday at the earliest. I’m heading out on a much needed vacation tomorrow morning, leaving my laptop at home. I’m heading over to Salem Thursday morning, playing at the A.C. Gilbert Discovery Village with the kids, hit the Salem Carousel, have a nice dinner, and then sleep. Wake up the next morning, head over to the Oregon Coast Rockaway, specifically), maybe stop and sample some cheese. Stay a couple nights at my grandparents beach house on the lake there. Come back Sunday. Sleep. Go to work on Monday.

See you on Sunday, folks. I don’t have MovableType’s scheduled publishing feature setup yet, so I can’t pre-write a bunch of posts for the weekend. I left you with a bunch of links to read and digest today, so have fun.

For those of you on my mailing list, I apologize as you’ll see these same links for a couple days as I can’t get the thing to not send when there isn’t anything different. Sorry.

Why Condoms Are Good

Otherwise you end up with demon-spawn kids that pull stunts like this. Thanks Greg for the hilarious commercial.
