Welcome Source Readers

Apparently The Source, who interviewed me a couple weeks ago for their latest issue (on the stands today), thinks of me as the “godfather of local blogs.” I certainly don’t think I’d go that far, especially considering there are a few bloggers around here (Jon and Shannon come to mind) that I’m pretty sure have been doing this longer than I have, even if my site does get more traffic. But I do like to watch over my local blogging buddies, so I guess you could call me that. Out of all the things I’ve been called, it could’ve been a lot worse I guess.

Just the same, welcome to anybody who’s here because of that little blip. I can’t find the story on the Source’s web site, otherwise I’d link to it. But the quote the writer got from a local blog (which I can’t find on Bend Blogs right now as I don’t feel like digging for it, but I have no doubt that he got it from there) is worth picking up a copy just to read as it’s pretty funny.

Anybody Heard Of Hungry Howie’s Pizza?

Apparently they’re coming to Bend, or at least somebody covered a franchise agreement that covers this city as well as Portland. I honestly have never heard of the place, but here’s their Web page, but they have them all over the place with over 500 locations. Sounds like a better quality Little Ceasars, basically, but somebody correct me if I’m wrong.

Did KBND Kill Their Afternoon News?

Did I miss something here? Every day on my commute home, I had been listening to the local news on KBND before switching over to NPR. The last few days, however, when I turn on the radio, I hear that crack-pot Sean Hannity (which I’ve already made clear they’ve basically lost me as a listener because of it). But despite what it says on their on-air schedule, it appears they’ve decided to bulldoze their 5-6PM news hour (or at least part of it — I’d usually listen between 5:30 and 6:00, as that’s when I was generally in the car).

Anybody have any idea what’s going on? It does mean that they’re now broadcasting 10 hours of conservative talk radio between 6AM and midnight, assuming that Hannity has taken over that hour that used to be the afternoon news.

I do have an e-mail into them to see what’s going on, and will update here accordingly, but I’ll be flipping off KBND for good now (other than during Oregon Duck games) if this is the case.

Damn You, Portland

There was always one thing that we could hold over you — the fact that we had a Deschutes Brewery brew pub and you didn’t. That’s going to change.

Maniac Drives Through Bend, Videotapes it, Posts It Online

I don’t remember why or how I came across this site, but this video (embedded after the jump) shows a guy driving like a maniac in and around Bend (we’re talking 90+ north of Bend on Highway 97). It was posted three days ago, so if he isn’t a full-time resident, he was probably here for the holiday weekend and posted that when he got home (or it could be older, I have no idea — but I’m sure there are clues in the video that date it appropriately).

The video’s frickin’ huge, and takes a bit to stream, but I did manage to get a copy downloaded so that if the embed goes bad, I’ll see if I can host a local copy here (it’s a 62 meg, 15 minute FLV file, so I’m holding that off as long as I can).

But tell me: How many scenes around the area can you identify? I know that parking garage, that stretch of highway north of Bend (as well as in front of the Mountain View Mall Cascade Village Shopping Center). I’m sure if you watch this close enough, you can probably get license plate numbers or some other incriminating information about these idiots, so have fun.

Spring Cleaning At Bend Blogs

I do this once in a while, and it was time to do it again. I just put about 30 blogs into deprecated status at Bend Blogs, meaning they won’t be checked for updates or listed on the front page. Why? Because they either haven’t updated in 12 months, the blog has gone or have left the area. So there are now 228 blogs that have been updated in the last 12 months getting indexed over at Bend Blogs. If I’m missing any, be sure to let me know.

Welcome KTVZ.com Readers

A couple days ago I posted about a group of Bigfoot searchers who were coming to Central Oregon next summer. Today, a story ran in the Bulletin (which you have to pay to read online and I forgot to read it in the print edition at work), and KTVZ now has the story on their Web site, and Barney was nice enough to give me a link and credited me with reporting it on Monday (I have no idea if the Bulletin mentions my site).

However, I forgot to properly thank the person who sent me that link originally, so Cheryl, thanks for that! She also sent it to Dave Barry (like she does with many things she sends me, as I always see his email included in what she sends me). He posted it on his blog before I did because he obviously has more free time on his hands than I or is getting paid to blog and write or something. (That being said, I’ve been known to send Dave stuff, too as I have a lot of respect for the guy.)

Just the same, welcome to all you KTVZ folks!

Or Not… (update 1/17/07 @ 10AM): The link was removed from the story. If I find out why, I’ll post here.

This Will Be A Huge Boon To Central Oregon Tourism

I’d completely avoid Central Oregon from June 14-17. Why? Because the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization is coming to Central Oregon, and you know those guys can get a little crazy searching for Sasquatch. But considering there have been twelve sightings in Deschutes County and 195 total in Oregon, I can see their reasons for coming here.

My Commute Sucks

My job is fine. It pays the bills, I work with nice people, make decent money, it’s secure, etc… but the one thing I hate about my job more than anything is actually getting to the office on a daily basis. Especially on days like this.

Complaining about my commute is nothing new on this site. I drive from the north east side of Bend to Sunriver every day. Usually takes me about 40 minutes to do it, 30 on a clear sunny day (hit the parkway and go). It’s been raining in Bend for the last 24 hours or so, and then it dropped below freezing last night so all that rain turned to ice. However, it kept snowing south of Bend (high elevation) so there was basically two or three inches of snow on top of the skating rink that Highway 97 has become south of Lava Butte. And the highway is already horribly dangerous in that area, narrowing down into one narrow southbound lane from two and being further narrowed by the amount of snow on the road.

This is a stretch of highway that people generally drive way too fast, especially in the Winter. There are a lot of tourists and others who have never driven in the snow, and SUV owners who think they can easily drive 65+MPH on a 55MPH road that’s covered with ice. As I was approaching where the road narrows up to one lane, I was going maybe 30MPH (at the most) as were all the cars in front of me. I look up in my rear-view window and see a small SUV (little Isuzu or something) with skis on top rapidly approaching me (going at least 60). I could see him getting closer and closer, and meanwhile I’m trying to find a place to bail out in case he can’t stop. At the last minute, he finally looks up from his cell phone and slams on his brakes, nearly flying off the road. Then he proceeds to tailgate me all the way to the Sunriver turnoff (about three miles down the road). I couldn’t pull off to let him by without endangering myself further.

And then the real fun started. They’re building a new cloverleaf interchange at the intersection of South Century Drive (the main Sunriver turn off) and the highway. It’s a mess down there right now, and turning off into Sunriver is even more dangerous than before until the construction is completed. I proceed to make the right-hand turn as slow as my car will go, get it turned at the 90° angle, and my car continues to slide. It slid about eight feet before coming to a stop literally three inches from a large pickup truck. So I thankfully didn’t hit him, but I was rattled quite a bit. But as I spent a few seconds gaining my senses there are getting shaken up, jackass SUV boy that was tailgating me for the last few miles whips by me, and proceeds to drive 70+ towards the mountain.

That stretch of road is so nasty, and if I could have this same job in Bend, I’d be a lot less stressed out. That interchange that will (in theory) make that area a bit safer can not come soon enough.

And as I was writing this entry, we just got a phone call from a Realtor at our office here, who said there’s a truck Jack-knifed at the intersection where I nearly hit the pickup. I don’t see anything on TripCheck yet, but apparently the highway’s been closed.

Morals of this story? If you have an SUV, that doesn’t give you any right to haul butt down the road. Two, drive carefully out there, as it’s a mess.

Be Wary Of Cheap Computer Parts For Sale Locally

A couple of local computer shops were broken into over the weekend. The culprit hasn’t been caught yet, so if you are approached by anybody offering to sell you cheap parts, be very wary and call the Bend Police Department (or if you’d like, email me and I can tell you if it’s indeed a proper price for the item or if you should be suspicious).

I don’t know the folks at Click and Fix, but I do know the folks at PHD Computers, having bought quite a bit of stuff from them over the years. They’re a wholesaler here in town, and have probably more inventory than most. But their stuff all has barcode labels that they adhere to the packages, so if you see a unusual barcode label or a spot where a label has obviously been removed (usually on front of the package), call the police.
