Another Site Added To The Feed Reader

Random Acts of Reality is a blog written by an ambulance driver about the cases he comes across and the emotional and physical tolls the job will take on you. Having know a great deal of EMTs and Firefighters throughout my life (my mom was an emergency room nurse for 20+ years), and even running the Hood To Coast one year with a bunch of EMTs, I really enjoyed reading the site. It’s now in my Feeddemon feed list, and will be added to my Blogroll once I re-do the thing (there are lots of sites I read that aren’t on there, and vice versa).

What Kind Of American English Do You Speak?

I’m 75% General American English with 20% Yankee and 5% Upper Midwestern. What are you?

Florida Man Owns Pope’s Domain

A Florida guy took some educated guesses and registered the domains of potential Pope names. One of the ones he registered was right on the money. More details on the man’s blog with his demands (of sorts) from the Vatican.

Adobe To Buy Macromedia

Holy kitchen-appliances. I didn’t see this coming. But I can’t say that it will be that bad of a thing (we’ll just have to wait to see what Ken says).

I’m a user of products from both companies. From Adobe I use Pagemaker (because I can’t afford an upgrade to Indesign), Acrobat, Photoshop and, on rare occasion, Illustrator. From Macromedia I use Homesite more than anything (and have long before it was a Macromedia product), but occassionally use Dreamweaver and Fireworks (haven’t gotten really into Flash development). Both companies develop competing products that each have features that the other should have, and it will be nice to quit seeing them try to one-up each other all the time.

My concerns:

  • GoLive had better not replace Dreamweaver, as Dreamweaver is far superior and extendable.
  • Homesite better not disappear. While I know there are a hundred good text editors out there, Homesite is what I’m used to and what I’m good with. It’s got it’s quirks, but many of the solutions I’ve tried do, too. Homesite’s original developer asks the same question.
  • Adobe is a big supporter of the SVG format which competes directly with Flash. While SVG is a W3C-approved format, Flash is far more mature as a platform for Web applications. Which one will live?
  • While I’m not a big fan of ColdFusion, I know a lot of people who are. Adobe better not kill development for that, otherwise they’re going to anger a lot of people (or convince them to move to PHP).

Anyway, this is interesting, and will be fun to watch (and again, I’m sure Ken, who knows more about all of this, will contribute more later on his site). Mezzoblue has some good thoughts on this and he also links to other blog posts with lots of great questions. Here’s a comment from a guy that works at a newspaper

Who’s Been Drawing Dilbert?

I didn’t notice, but some of the Dilbert’s characters lately have been being drawn slightly differently, and conspiracy theorists seem to think that somebody else had been drawing the Dilbert strip. Actually, Scott Adams has still been drawing Dilbert but some of his latest strips have been done left-handed because of problems with his hands. Thanks Barney for the link (though I thought I was subscribed to that newsletter, but I never saw that note).

Want To Destroy The Earth?

Late-Life Sex Prolongs Life

At least in monkeys. So when you see those 80-year-old millionaires on TV with their new 20-year-old hottie, he’s doing something good for his health (even if it’s not for his pocket book).

Don’t Blame Wal-Mart

There are some folks who really don’t want to see a new Wal-Mart Superstore show up here in Bend. I understand everybody’s gripe about it, but I’m sorry: I’m like most Americans and like low prices. I like supporting the local community, and do when I can, but, for the most part, I go wherever is easy and cheap (two things that will be more available since the new Wal-Mart will be about two miles from my house).

Should we really be blaming Wal-Mart when Americans like low prices? I don’t think so. Besides, they are really good at getting federal funding for projects, so maybe they can help us out a bit.

Disneyland’s Secret Boozy Club

Just above the Pirates of the Caribbean ride in Disneyland is a semi-secret private club that is the only place in the entire park that you can drink. But good luck getting in. Link via BB.

New “For Sale” Site

Anybody ever used Pricetag? It basically is a fixed-price listing site and free to list on. Anybody had good luck with this? I wonder how they make money.
