There Are Some Serious Geeks At Playboy

Apparently there’s an Open Source CPAN Mirror on Playboy.com, as well as an Apache, FreeBSD, and Fedora mirrors. Link via Waxy.

Something for the bookmarks, a good CSS Optimizer. Link from Chris.

Perl Programming at Its Finest: The De-moroniser

Anybody who knows anything about Web design and coding knows that Microsoft’s products, including it’s “Web developer” stuff, produce some of the nastiest HTML code imaginable. This Perl script will convert Microsoft’s “HTML” into something at least usable as a starting point to use online.

Now what somebody needs to do is take this perl code and put it online somewhere and make it usable so you can just put a URL into a form field, and have it clean it up, and spit back the results (I’m not nearly good enough in Perl to do that). I’m sure it would be a bandwidth/CPU hog, but it’d be so worth it.

Smart Image Hotlinking Protection

Another one for the bookmarks when I decide to turn back on my image blocking. Thanks to Neil for the link.

For The Bookmarks

If I decide to stick with MT, I need to make sure I do this, which will let me use PHP everywhere, working around those pesky CGI templates.

Advanced PDF Linking

Adding this here so I don’t have to bookmark, how to link to PDF files from Web pages covers all the various extensions you can send that will enable you to link directly to a specific page, destination, or set the zoom or view level in the link. Via MovableBlog’s Side Blog.

Moving MovableType from 2.x to 3

If you plan on moving from MovableType version 2.x to version 3, I’d keep this guide handy. I still am probably going to be migrating to WordPress at some point, but I’m keeping this handy in case I change my mind. Link from Neil’s Smaller World.

Real Content Management

I’ve worked in a variety of content management solutions, and I helped develop, debug, and test the one in use at Digital Partners (aka ispi). Content management solutions like MovableType are great chunks of software, well written for your basic content manager, but there is one thing they don’t have, and that’s a good understanding of the editorial process.

Amy Gahran has written a great piece (as well as a follow up article) about what she wishes content management vendors and Web site/intranet owners would understand about the editorial process so they can adapt their tools accordingly. A good read, especially if this type of thing is of interest to you.

Optimizing your MovableType blog for Google

Assuming I decide to stick with MovableType and not move to WordPress, I’ll have to make sure I follow these tips to keep a good listing on Google (though many of these tips will work for WordPress as well). Link via Ken’s Side Blog.
