OS X Running on a 68K Mac

It should take about a week to boot, but it’s getting there:

What next? I Wait. According to the developers, PearPC using generic emulation (the only option on a non-x86) runs “about 500 times slower” than the host CPU. Ouch. That makes for a 0.05MHz G3, at the best. That’s around 4000 times slower than the Athlon boots, and since that takes roughly 2 and a half minutes – I’m looking at at least 6.99 days. One week to boot!

Gmail Disk Drive for Windows

I already mentioned the ability to pull this off in Linux, but now somebody has made it so Gmail can appear as a drive in My Computer. Right on! Link via Waxy.

Auto Patching Windows

I actually saw this mentioned in my last Maximum PC magazine, and wanted to mention it here, mostly for bookmark purposes.

Autopatcher is an all-in-one updater for Windows 2000, XP, and 2003. If you’re sick of going to Windows Update all the time, this includes every patch and update from Windows Update as well as a pile of registry tweaks, add on software, and other cool stuff. I just plan on burning this to a CD to bring to when I do a service call, and call it good.

The same group also has an Autostreamer, which gives you a slick interface to slipstream and create a new Windows installation CDs that are updated with the latest service pack. Dang cool.

Lock Down SSH

Now that I have root-level access on my Web server, I’m going to make sure these are all taken care of as the last thing I need is somebody compromising my Web server. Link via Neil.

Either buy a new house, or spend dang near as much and construct these virtual windows.

Ten Useful CSS Tricks

Since I’m a relative CSS-idiot, these tips are quite handy. Link via Nick.

Windows 2000 Post SP4 Patches

If you manage a Windows 2000 server or desktop (I have 5 servers, 3 desktops here at the office), you’ll want to bookmark this page. Microsoft will nearly always create patches for problems, but will generally not release them to the public unless you call them and beg them for it. This site has all those patches that were created after Service Pack 4 was released for Windows 2000, and I found some patches on there that are going to seriously help me in troubleshooting some Terminal Services issues here at the office. They also have a similar page for Windows 2003 Server

MovableType 3.1 Launched

I think I’m going to stick to MovableType vs. moving to WordPress (despite my previous comments), and will make the attempt (at some point) to upgrade to the newly released 3.1. Why? Instead of writing it all down, I think Neil stated it perfectly.

In addition, they’ve also launched a 6A Professional Network, and revamped the MT Plugin Directory (which is now an official Six Apart site) to be MT3-specific. They’re also putting the plugin contest entries into one tidy download.

Google Hacks of a Different Sort

You may have heard of the Google Hacks Book (which is on my “To Buy Whenever I Get The Cash” list), but one of the real strengths (and scary things) about Google is its ability to dig up information on passwords, usernames, and vulnerabilities that idiots have left open and online.
