…but look at the 17″ LCD on this portable bad-boy, and I’m almost wishing I had the cash. Almost.

Ohio State Wins!
It’s about damn time Miami lost. What a great game.
Banned Words
I, personally, wouldn’t mind if I NEVER heard the phrase “Homeland Security” ever again. Whatever happened to the Department of Defense? Just don’t get me started about how Bush is running this country.
Anyway, Lake Superior State University has issued its 28th annual ‘extreme’ List of Words Banished from the Queen’s English for Mis-Use, Over-Use and General Uselessness, which the world needs ‘now, more than ever.’
Among the words/phrases on the list: Must-See TV, Material Breach, Untimely Death, and Now, More Than Ever.
How come I never got to do cool things like this in college?
Oh that’s right…I was a journalism major, not a CompSci major (I was a lowly CIT Minor).
These guys managed to create a pretty cool interactive foosball table, which keeps track of scores, users, stats, etc.., and it all cost less than $50 to build. Reminds me of the Harvard guys who built a web-accessible dartboard.
How fast is your connection?
There are a pile of various Internet connection speed tests out there, but I’m kind of interested in this one. The reason being that is doesn’t just check your data going to its server, the measurement simulates normal surfing behaviour by fetching images from a set of 40 popular websites. In other worlds, you’re getting more accurate, realistic results. According to a quick test here at work, I’m running at 320kbs (that’s kilo-BITS, remember) which is about right because we’re on a 512kbs DSL line here.
Good lord that’s fast!
Haile Gebrselassie of Ethiopia (don’t ask me to pronounce it) broke the world record in the 10-K road race, winning a cool $1-million, clocking in at 27:11 (which is still a minute slower than he’s done on the track). Generally, Geb usually does track races (holding the world record in the 5,000 and 10,000), but obviously money talks. But the guy can run twomiles in 8 minutes, 3 miles in 12:12 (and he did that en-route to his 5,000 world record).
Let’s see, the best I’ve ever run in a 10K on the road was 33:40 or so — so he would’ve finished a mile-and-a-half ahead of me, on my BEST day. Yikes that’s fast.
Watch DVDs on your computer case!?!
This is one of the coolest case modifications I’ve ever seen. This guy modified the door of his Antec computer case to include what you’d usually see in expensive mini-vans: a mini-LCD screen hooked to a DVD player. Very nice work, and beats the heck out of a lot of the case mods I’ve seen.
Mechanic piches in to bail out town
Nabbed From Fark. A car repair shop owner in Berkley, Michigan, is pitching in to help with the city’s roughly $1.2 million budget shortfall projected for 2003 pledging to help its struggling town by donating an estimated $12,000 worth of work on the city’s police cars in 2003. Full Story. The world needs more people like this.
Snow Rush!
OK, I know what I’ll be spending the rest of my lunch doing: Playing Snowrush!
HotBot is Back
Back in the day, HotBot was the power user’s search engine. It was clean, fast, and you could do a lot of advanced stuff with it. Now they’ve got a neat little feature that allows you to search Fast, Google, Inktomi, and Teoma all from the same interface, allowing you to easily switch between the results from each engine. It’s not a META search (which would include all the results from all the engines in one page), but still a pretty neat tool. And HotBot still has some of the best advanced search tools out there, and it incorporates the advanced tools from those various engines as well.
