So I haven’t gotten online once since last Wednesday after a small trip to the coast for the weekend to help build a deck at my grandma’s beach house. Among the highlights in my fully-packed inbox upon my return:
- Apparently BendBroadband is in trouble with one commenter saying they’ve already sold (no confirmation yet — I emailed “fred”). It’s starting to make their Bandwidth Cap look more and more like a money grab if this all turns out to be true. Can anybody confirm/deny? E-mail utterlyboring [at] gmail [dot] com.
- Barney has way too much fun with alliteration (knowing him, he could’ve made it much worse, but refrained).
- Finding weed is apparently pretty hard in Bend (thanks Kina!)
- COWPU and COISUG got some press.
- The US track team sucked it up.
I haven’t gotten through all my email or my local blogs yet. It does appear that a local blog did make it into the paper, showing even more how Bend Blogs are getting read by the local media (the Bulletin’s IP address is easily BendBlogs.com’s biggest reader, which is fine as it’s a great source for local information and commentary).
Anything else I missed over the last few days?
Update on 8/26: Full BendBroadband press release after the jump.
Press Statement
BendBroadband is reviewing its position in the market and evaluating its place in the broader national cable, wireless and telecommunications environment. We are mindful of our history as a successful family business that is focused on its employees, its customers and the communities we serve. The Company is considering various scenarios, which include continuing as a family business. There is no proposal under consideration at this time that would change BendBroadband’s current ownership.
As BendBroadband surveys the market and considers its future, it plans to continue communicating with its employees. In the meantime, we recognize that our customers are counting on us and that we have aggressive Company goals to achieve. Our central focus continues to be the operation of our business.

Jake,
The official press release, paraphrased by KOHD on their website, says all there is to say. The company is exploring options. There has been no sale and there is no offer on the table. This same information has been communicated to employees and other local news media. This is a normal business practice, also as stated in the press release. There is no further information to report at this time.
thanks for keeping it real
John Farwell
VP Business Operations
Once in a blue moon, I like to alliterate. Never on a murder trial or something really major. This one seemed… almost safe. And yes, I left out a few obvious ‘B’s for fear of repercussions. If you can’t have a bit of levity in your job once in a while…;-)
Truly pitiful performance by the track team. The low point had to be when both the men’s and women’s 4×100 relay teams fumbled the baton pass. Simply inexcusable.
But, the US Women’s Soccer team delivered the gold. An amazing team performance.
There’s an article on BBB in the Bulletin today that mentions (as little as possible) utterlyboring.com. The article basically recaps Farwell’s press release and that it was posted on UtterlyBoring, but makes no mention of WHY it was necessary to issue the press release, nor WHY it was posted on UtterlyBoring. Is the Bulletin nothing but a bulletin board for press releases? Why don’t they report the whole story, instead of just the bare minimum that suits their interests? It would sure be nice to see all the news that’s fit to print.
I agree, Dave: Why issue the press release at all? It doesn’t have much real news of substance in it, just a “Look, things are sucking right now, we’re aware of it, we don’t know what we’re going to do.” Why bother even sending something like that out? Is this just a foreshadow of price increases to come? Or to entice potential investors to contact them?
As far as why BBB felt the need to issue the press release… KOHD was hearing (from several different sources) that things might be changing at the company, so we started making calls to try and confirm what we were being told. About a day later, they finally called us back with the information you see in the release (followed by the written release you see above).
I’d like to think the statement was due to our digging… but I think they would have been forced to address the issue eventually since the rumors were coming from all directions and were going to get hard to ignore.
It could be simply that it’s nice to tell the folks who work there first before any ‘press’ leaks.
I personally hope that they don’t change … it’s been a nice cable company that listens.
