Looking For A New Web Host/Dedicated Server Provider

LayeredTech, a dedicated server hosting company that I’ve used for years and have a couple servers with, has decided to raise their rates. Last year, it was a simple $8/month increase, which I was fine with as they promised remote reboot cards for their server. A year later, I still don’t have a remote reboot card for either of my servers, and they’ve decided to raise my rates $28/month for each server, no matter how many you have (and there are folks with dozens of servers with them). Needless to say, the natives are restless, and I tend to be one of them. They recently bought another Web hosting company and secured $11 million worth of funding, but apparently they don’t seem to find a problem with raising the rates for all their clients, cutting into the meager profits I had on these servers (as they’re mostly for hosting sites like this one along with some small companies around Bend).

Needless to say, I’m shopping around now. If anybody has any recommendations, I’d be glad to hear them (I have some emails into some reputable companies around the country). I’d also consider a partial advertising trade for a link on this site as well. Comment below or email utterlyboring [at] gmail [dot] com. I’d also consider co-location if the deal was right and the network didn’t suck (but I’d prefer just renting the server as that way I can yell at somebody if the hardware goes bad).

Maybe Bendtel? I haven’t had a problem with their service.

If BendTel can provided dedicated hosting, I’d talk to them. But as far as I know, they only offer colocation and I’d have to have spare parts on hand (which I wouldn’t have to with a dedicated server host). I’ll email the folks there, too.

I use Softlayer.com myself, although theplanet.com wasn’t too bad (they did go through a “merger” with ev1servers a couple of years ago which is when I pulled all the servers from them as they went downhill quite a bit: I’ve got no idea why they are like now), but if you are looking for a smaller server such as a VPS, I don’t hesitate to recommend Memset.com – however, with the current GBP to USD exchange rate, Softlayer.com may actually work out cheaper for you.
If you have multiple servers, have a word with Mary Hall (or another or the sales reps) at Softlayer as they do do discounts for bulk orders (if you do contact them, please let them know that I referred you to them 😉 ).

I’m hosted on a dedicated server of a business partner of mine, run by EV1servers (used to be rackshack).
Highly recommended, I’ve been on there coming on 5 years now, and I can count on one hand the number of problems we’ve ever had.

Hi, You might call Maggie at Integra Telecom. they do local webhosting.

Hey Jake, I am using Softlayer for a dedicated box right now and Liquid Web for a VPS. Both have excellent support.

I’ve tried VPS hosting (the price is very attractive), but I found I couldn’t live in the ram allotted me. I had a VPS account with 256mb burstable to 512mb. First off spam assasin would not run in the limited memory. Also CMS systems would load really slow. I’m now on a shared system with higher CPU utilization than we had on the VPS, but pages load in about 1/10th the time as before.

Another hosting company you might want to check out is ServOnDemand.com, my friend just rented a server from there and he’s been looking for a good host for a while and he’s as happy as can be. I suppose it would depend on your needs but they have some awesome pricing and service from what I hear.
