Being Dutch, I guess I’m kind of obliged to post a reply to this. 🙂
The thing is that in the Nationale Postcode Loterij the winners are determined by postal code, which brings forth a number of issues. Firstly, the winning number points to you, but you can only win if you participated.
Say there’s a lottery based on names, and that on a certain occasion everybody with the name Jake Ortman wins a cool million bucks. Aw, shucks, Jake, you didn’t pay the $2 to participate.
In that aspect, I can understand that to some extent its an invasion of your privacy, since the media will be crawling all over you — especially because you didn’t participate. Using postal codes makes things even worse because the winners are your neighbors. Nobody rubs your loss in better that the person living next door.
I was hoping they’d win the lawsuit. Mainly, though, because I hate lotteries.

In Oregon, the odds of winning the lottery are about the same whether you play or not. 😉

Jake says:

I was hoping we’d get a response from you, Paul. Thanks for the insight!
