So I head to the store for a caffiene run. Walk up to the counter with my straight-from-the-tap caffiene of choice, and the lady behind the checkstand was getting trained. So I listen in, and they say that if I hadn’t put my straw in my cup, I could’ve used food stamps on my soda, but since I put my straw into my cup, I couldn’t (not that I was using food stamps, but she was getting trained).
The trainer nor the trainee had any idea why that was the case, but that’s just what they were told.
Anybody have a clue?

Food stamps can only be used for non-prepared foods, or something like that. They can sell you the coffee, as long as its not ready to drink, i suppose.
The same reason that the local mini-mart says you can’t use their microwave if you want to use food stamps.
Yep, nothing hot. No deli fried chicken, but 25 candy bars? Yep.
The idea is that you shouldn’t be able to consume the product on the premises, otherwise it’s no different than a restuarant, which doesn’t accept food stamps.
It’s similar in the UK. We have VAT (Value Added Tax) on most items except “essential foodstuffs”. If you go into a McDonalds, you can have a milkshake to “drink in” at one price, but if you take it away, you get a discount as milk is a “essential foodstuff” which you may be carrying home.
There is no such thing here in India. You can just use it for everything the shop or mall sells provided the shop accepts it atall.
