Surfing The Web So You Don't Have To

Granted, I’m taking Simone’s word on this as the two stores that I was at yesterday had the particular issue, but they didn’t have this story in them for some reason (Maybe it’s a regional thing?). Congrats just the same, Simone!
If you have the money to buy a coffin now, no sense in letting it go to waste while you wait to kick the bucket. Get one that doubles as a window seat, entertainment center, or a book shelf.

I’ve mentioned before how Google has a uncanny way of indexing things that you might not want indexed, and it only gets more interesting. Google Labs has introduced a new code search feature that is already finding lots of interesting stuff.
Long story short, put passwords on any compressed archives you post on a public space, unless you want Google to index their contents.
On less-than-invasive news, Google now has an XML-RPC interface so you can ping it with your Weblog.
I’m working through some issues on the site here, folks, regarding comment spam. For some reason it’s appearing on the site, despite being marked as junk in Movable Type. I think I found the offending bit of code, and I’m doing a full rebuild to hopefully clear things up, but if you notice obvious comment spam somewhere on the site, please e-mail me at utterlyboring [at] gmail[dot] com and let me know the URL where you saw it (or post a comment here).
Kids these days — they’d rather IM or text message than pick up the phone, and today’s User Friendly reminds me of a conversation I had with someone of the younger generation the other day (I’m only 28, so I’m hardly an old fogey, but I felt like the grumpy old codger around this guy).
Now I use IM and I use text messaging, but I use text messaging for incoming message (when servers go down) and that’s about it. I do use IM when I’m at work as it’s quicker and easier than a phone call many times (and I can’t always get a phone call in), but what frustrates me are the people who would rather sit in front of a computer chatting via IM instead of just picking up the phone (especially when it’s a local call). At least get skype or something if you insist on sitting in front of the computer.
Stephen Colbert gave out a vanity phone number on his show — 1-888-OOPS-JEW (and lots of bloggers called it). The phone call response brought down phone switches all over the east coast, but the number always worked, says the company that setup the phone number.

The talk given Mischa Spiegelmock and Andrew Wbeelsoi at Toorcon that discussed a security flaw in Firefox was actually meant to be humorous, not cause the mass panic it did.
This is nearly a 30-year tradition, but the Annual Mooning of Amtrak just screams “If you give me enough beer, I’ll do anything!”
Granted, I say this as a guy who mooned more than few people in my high school days, so maybe I shouldn’t be so hypocritical. I guess I just grew up.
The strangest things make people hot, and apparently some people are turned on by tube crushing — the act of stomping and squeezing every amount of liquid mass out of a tube.

This is the funniest thing I’ve read in a long time. A blogger decided to take some Ricky Martin song lyrics, compose them into e-mail asking for Biblical advice, and then sending the e-mail to several right-wing Christian web sites, soliciting responses. He did get some responses and they were priceless.
