This is one of the coolest inventions I’ve ever seen: A rechargeable AA battery with a built-in USB connecter that you can plug into any USB port to charge. Just flip back the tip and plug it in. Very nice, indeed.

My understanding of battery technology leads me to believe that not only would this is not be economically feasible, but such a battery would have extremely little power simply due to the limited amount of space physically left over for the chemicals.
Indeed: the FAQ states that the USBCELL’s delivers 1300 mAh. NiMH batteries of the same size go up and beyond 2600 mAh — twice that of USBCELL. Bear in mind that Alkaline batteries (non-rechargeables) are rated at about 350 mAh, so the argument of power doesn’t cut it.
Also remember that charging a single USBCELL takes five hours and, like any other NiMH, they don’t last forever (about 1000 cycles and 30% discharge per month). Paying over $15 for a pair is expensive.
Instead, buy some good, heavy duty NiMH batteries and a mini two-hour charger instead (both preferably from a trusted brand). The batteries are less than half as expensive and charging is quicker and more reliable. This will save you time and money.
