OK, this is a total cross-post, so if you’re not interested in reading about a fund-raising drive I’m doing for Bend Forums, don’t bother reading on. Normal posting coming when I get through the rest of my email.
One of the biggest features I’d like to include at Bend Forums is a feature which pulls RSS feeds from local sources and automatically creates forum threads to foster discussion. So, for example, I could pull a local news feed, and have threads automatically created from new entries in that RSS feed. I know there are some forum packages that do this off-the-shelf, but I really like working with Vanilla and think that it would be a great addition to many sites, not just this one.
I think it would be a great way to foster discussion here. I think that was one think I did enjoy about Bend.com, back in its prime, was that there was great discussion on the day’s news stories because the forums were tied into the news content. I plan to bring in local news into discussion here, because many local sites don’t offer abilities to comment and discuss these things on their own sites. The discussion shouldn’t be stopped, it should be fostered — even if it’s via unofficial means.
So after discussing the project on the Lussumo forums, I started a fund-raising campaign. You’re welcome to pledge as little as $10, and no money will be collected unless our goal of $1300 $1000 is met.
If you have any questions about the project, feel free to comment here or on the fund raising page.
