Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg

No, that’s not me just smashing keys on my keyboard, that’s apparently the (un)official name for Lake Webster east of Webster, Massachusetts. It’s the longest place name in the United States. More information here and here. You can see the sign for the lake here.

But I have one question: Can anybody pronounce it?

Thanks Barney for the link.

Here’s how I was taught to pronounce it:
Cha gog a gog man chaug a gog cha bun a gung ga maug.
As a bonus, I ‘ll tell you what it means.
“You fish on your side of the lake, I’ll fish on my side and no one will fish in the middle.”

I ‘ve actually been to that lake. An old roommate of mine had a house there that had been in the family for a long time. We pronounced it: “Let’s go over to Jean’s house.”
It’s a beautiful little lake.
