This is yet another reason why I’ll miss places like the Juniper Cafe: Some of the local, high-end, trendy restaurants locally that are catering to the yuppie folks around here don’t seem to care when they treat you like crap.
Take Kanpai Bend, for example. Shannon and Simone both had horrible experiences because of wait staff that, for the most part, thought their restaurant was the coolest thing since sliced bread and that because they are popular, they didn’t need to be nice.
You’re a sushi place, folks (and a small one at that), and you’re replaceable as there are probably dozen restaurants here that have sushi as well as a few grocery stores that sell very good stuff as well (I’ve heard that the Newport Market’s is actually very good). In other words, enjoy your popularity while it lasts, as it won’t for too long. Every new restaurant here has a surge of popularity when it first opens, and only the good ones survive afterwards when the customers drop. The previous inhabitant of that space, the Brooklyn Cafe, was the same way: very full the first few months, and then fairly dead thereafter.
So good luck to you: You’re going to need it.

Thanks Jake!
Actually, Wild Oats has the best store made sushi and I’d rather go to Wild Oats or Newport Market for Sushi over Kanpai!
I love sushi but love porn even more, so if your interested in porn and sushi drop me a line im more than willing to give as well as take, thanks for your thoughts! Elise
please check here for more reviews of Kanpai:

Actually, I think that you are all off by a few pickles in your barrel. Kanpai has some of the best sushi that I have ever eaten. And, as for the waitstaff, the only problems that I have ever had is that they have been so busy that it takes a minute for them to get to you. Which, might I add, is an american thing. We want our food and we want it now. Don’t you think that, that is why we are so fat!!! Sometimes waiting for your food is not such a bad thing, it might actually slow down some of the american pigs out there.
Kanpai only uses the freshest ingredients, and being 5 months pregnant, they are the only ones I would trust to serve me sushi. The sushi chefs are more knowledgeable than “Bob” or “Joe” working at wild oats. I could not disagree with your comments more. You all need to get out of the country for a day or two and sample something other than liver and onions from the Juniper Cafe.
So here goes, I’ve heard tale of bad service, I have not yet run into that problem yet. It takes a while yes, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad. as for the comments of “American Pigs” that is more of a problem than bad sushi…Not all americans are pigs, Not all hippies smell, not all black people speak ebonics, not all rich people are ass holes, I’m tired of people downing the country that has litteraly given them everything, I am not a right wing I am not left, there is no reason for anybody who has reaped the benefits of living here to complain whatsoever! take your Idealistic opinion and reevaluate it. Actually use your head instead of listening to every devicive Rush Limbaugh or Al Franken sermon. Think for yourself! Sorry for the rant.
I poop on all of you!!!
I honestly love this resteraunt, they may be slow but the good food makes up for it. If you do not like the service take it to go. This is my favorite sushi restraunt in Bend OR!
I really didn’t want to do this…
…but now that it’s hit the Bulletin, I’d better at least comment on the whole Baltazar’s mess. A bit of background: Last week, the local Mom2Mom group posted an entry…
This was the worst dining experience of my life. I don’t know what was the worst part. Waiting 10 minutes to be seated, having menus thrown at us, having to ask for utensils and then having then tossed backhanded while on the move (almost impressive), our waiter saying exactly 6 words to us the entire time (although he hit on every chick in the place), and not a single drink refill. We intentionally walked to dinner in expectation of taking sake bombs, but since the waiter wouldn’t talk to us we couldn’t order but one small draft of sake.
My girlfriend got so angry that I had to put on a chipper facade so that we could at least finish our food and get out without violence.
The food was decent though.
