You Knew It Was Going To Happen

Someone in a position to warn a crap load of people about their impending Tsunami doom tried his best, but he couldn’t reach anyone.

On a related note, the “official” death toll stands at 158,018 (though the number could potentially grow once they get to some other areas).

As a coastal Oregonian living approx. 30 feet above sea level, and right by the water, I often wonder if their “designated tsunami zones” here are really adequate.

Barney says:

Wyrd – may you (and all of us living now) never have to find out;-/

yoleen says:

Wyrd, are they planning any test drills in light of recent events? Do they test them now and then?

aaron says:

I tried to warn thailand as well, but nobody would listen to me either. you’d think that if there was an earthquake out in the ocean, people would figure out that a tidal wave will be sent out and eventually hit land at some point. we learned that in 2nd grade science class, and it didn’t even occur to those guys over there with PHDs. that’s amazing.

Wyrd says:

We have never had any test drills, even though we have experienced title surges before, wiped out Crescent City south of us. They don’t give a crap about the west coast.

Meridee says:

There are earthquakes under water almost every single day of the year. In fact, there have been some sizable ones off the Oregon Coast this past year. It takes a specific set of circumstances for a tsunami to be generated from these quakes, however. Thus earthquakes don’t always equal tsunamis.
There will certainly be efforts, now, to provide more early warning systems in light of what has just taken place in Indonesia and the Indian Ocean…. hopefully on a more world wide basis. At least the Pacific Coast of America already has a system in place – primarily as a result of the enormous damage done in Cresent City after the Alaskan earthquake of 1964.

Wyrd says:

What system? The only thing I have ever heard was them saying on the news, well, we are having a tsunami watch. That’s it. I thought I read in our local paper that they were going to implement some system or at least in the planning stages, but haven’t yet.
