Here’s what Rumsfeld said Friday: “I think all of us have a sense if we imagine the kind of world we would face if the people who bombed the mess hall in Mosul, or the people who did the bombing in Spain, or the people who attacked the United States in New York, shot down the plane over Pennsylvania and attacked the Pentagon, the people who cut off peoples’ heads on television to intimidate, to frighten ? indeed the word ‘terrorized’ is just that. Its purpose is to terrorize, to alter behavior, to make people be something other than that which they want to be.”
Several eyewitnesses to the crash claim they saw a “military-type” plane flying around United Airlines Flight 93 when the hijacked passenger jet crashed ? prompting the once-unthinkable question of whether the U.S. military shot down the plane.
This is going to make the folks who thought their friends and family fought back on that plane really doubt anything the government tells them.

If you read it in context, it appears that Rumsfeld misspoke – he’s talking about terrorists, “…the people who attacked the United States in New York, shot down the plane over Pennsylvania…” Last I heard, they figured out that the terrorists decided to dive the plane into the ground once they figured the passengers would get to them and they might not make it to their target. So, “crashed” would have been the more accurate term. The only plane I read about being in the same area was a C-130 Hercules, and they don’t carry armament.
Of course, this probably won’t persuade those who are convinced that it was shot down, but I think it was just a mistake in Rumsfeld’s statement – he used the wrong term.
robert, don’t be naive. people who get briefed by lots of folks don’t make mistakes…they make fruedian slips. bush makes mistakes because he doesn’t know any better. but you can’t believe that someone as intelligent, and as biligerant as rummy is that he made a mistake….nahhhh. thats not american. wake up folks those people who are running things now are terrible liars. thats why they slip up. all the time.
The morning of September 11th 2001 has been etched in my mind as if it occurred yesterday; and will always remain so. What I recall vividly and with fairly good ease is the reporting of the plane over Pennsylvannia as having been “shot down” by an American Jet Fighter, as ordered by the Pentagon. Hours later I heard a different story from both CNN and Fox News, both who seemed a bit hesitant and dubious during their broadcast, toward the information they were receiving from their sources. Not being much for conspiracy theories or Orwellian paranoia, I have to admit that everything points to the greater and very viable possibility that our Govt has in fact concealed the facts of this event.
If my memory serves correct, I too recall hearing about the NY planes, going to cnn.com and recieving a screen that said soemthing or the other about “due to irregular high volume of visitors page not available.” I clicked refresh a few times and got a simple text screen (with CNN letterhead) in point form outlining what had and was going on. This was after the second plane in NY had hit, and the one that “crashed” was described as not responding to radio contact and that fighter jets had been ordered from some base and were currently tracking the plane. The next I heard was that the heroic passengers had forced the plane to crash.
