Freesco Router

Another one for the bookmarks (quoting LangaList):

FREESCO (stands for FREE ciSCO) is a free replacement for commercial routers supporting up to 3 ethernet/arcnet/token_ring/arlan network cards and up to 2 modems. Why should you use Freesco? Ease of use – it’s insanely easy to set up Thoroughly documented – it’s more or less self contained, read one doc and you’re off and running Like most players in this field, it runs off one floppy Freesco runs in as little as 6 Mb RAM. Unique Web Control Panel Freesco is the easiest to use, one disk Linux system available.

Just to note, when you go to the site, it says nearly the same thing as your quote, except the 2 and 3 are replaced with 10s, and the 6 is replaced with an 8.

Patrick says:

Yeah, but it runs on as little as a 386 🙂
That’s why the kernel is a 2.0.x

Jake says:

Hey, I said I quoted the Langalist, Rick. I was too lazy to actually read through everything on the site (hehe).

And Kernal 2.0x is still far more stable than any Windows-based firewall, that’s for sure.

I’m still kind of amazed that nobody has mastered creating an open-source real-time OS for networking equipment or similar. I feel as though much can be gained — perhaps a few extra magnitudes of performance squeezed out of older hardware for instance — if a real time OS were deployed in such a situation instead of applying old versions of Linux to every problem 🙂
Or rather, oo, haven’t I heard of a realtime-scheduling linux kernel around somewhere?
