The driver came back, and said that the fastest it could do was 104 MPH — going downhill and with a trailing wind. The speeding case was dropped (though he still had to pay £40 for “driving without due care and attention”).

I tried and failed with a similar (though less thorough) tactic when they gave me a ticket for 93 in a 55 in my Subaru Justy.
It wouldn’t have helped being more thorough though, I have gotten 104 downhill with a strong tailwind before 🙂
