Their quote, Microsoft’s quote from The Register: “The architectural limitations of Windows NT 4.0 do not support the changes that would be required to remove this vulnerability.” Please tell me I’m not the only one that manages a few NT 4.0 servers and don’t have the money to pay the Microsoft Tax to upgrade? You can firewall off the problem (which I’ve already done), but should you have to? MS’s security bulletin and more discussion on SlashDot.

HA HA you stil have to deal with NT 4. HA HA. 😛 we git rid of our Windows server and are running OS X Server for our hybrid mac/pc media lab at CTLT. Of course an Apple server is not much cheaper, well i dont know $1000 ($500 edu) for unlimited clients. Im not sure the prices for a Win2k server pricing. I managed a NT 4 server for the student newspaper, it was such a pain. We also now use OS X Server.
If I had a choice, I’d have this place moved over to Win2K, but it just ain’t that simple, unfortunately. We’re running 4 Win NT Servers here, one of them running Terminal Server. We have Citrix Metaframe installed on the Terminal Server, and it’s powering the 20 or so thin terminals in our building. Unfortunately, the version of Metaframe we have doesn’t work with Win2k without paying a whole bunch more.
Not only that, but our reservation system and accounting/bookkeeping system are 16-bit programs — one DOS based, on Windows 3.1 based.
So to upgrade to Windows 2K, here’s what we’d need:
-To Replace all the damn thin terminals with real systems.
-Buy 3 licenses
-Update our accounting/reservation software (we’re talking like $20,000 right there)
-Update the servers to handle what I’d throw at ’em.
-Money to bulldoze Wordperfect Office 2000 for Office 2000 or XP (as WP office doesn’t play nice with Windows 2K, at least that version).
-A miracle that it would all work right.
In other words, it ain’t going to happen any time soon :).
