This Actually Assumes I Had Money

But if I did, I’d follow some of these tips here, and make sure to avoid doing stupid things.

Flash Fun

These are great little adventure games that are simple, don’t have any text, but are quite fun.

Are Track Measurements and Records Accurate?

Anybody who knows me knows I’m a track and field geek (used to compete a lot more, but haven’t since my back surgery). So when I came across this story on Slate, I was certainly intrigued.

The Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell set a new world record for the 100-meter dash on June 14, with a time of 9.77 seconds. The previous record, set by American Tim Montgomery, was 9.78 seconds — just one-hundredth of a second slower. How accurate are the devices used to time these events?

They can record to the ten-thousandth of a second, although that level of precision is not commonly used. That’s because every track (and every lane) differs in length by a minuscule amount, so two runners who race at exactly the same speed might cross the finish line with times that differ by a tiny fraction of a second. In the 1972 Olympics, for example, two swimmers finished a 400-meter race within two-thousandths of a second — or a few millimeters — of each other. As it turned out, each lane of the swimming pool had been constructed to a precision of just 10 millimeters, so there was no way to determine the winner.

Luckily I raced longer distances where a centimeter ain’t going to matter worth a damn, but I can see this being a problem in shorter events.

Real Pong

It looks like the old classic video game, but it’s actually a machine doing all the work.

NEED: 16-port Cable TV Splitter

Since nobody else bothered to plan this far ahead, I’ve been put in charge of the cable TV distribution for the new Sunriver fitness center (which was supposed to be open this month, but still has a couple weeks to go). They have 15 TV jacks in the place, and I’ll be using cable for the Internet service for the building. Does anybody know of a good way (and if parts were available locally, that’d be peachy) to get the signal to these TVs without spending a crapload of money? I looked at some of the Leviton stuff, and found this 16-port setup that I’ll have to get an enclosure for, but just wanted to see if anybody else had any other ideas (or places online to buy this stuff that can ship overnight or two day shipping).

What Will The News Of The Future Be?

Another Great Google Map Hack

I know I’ve listed several Google Map Hacks before, but this one is pretty cool: linking US Census data with Google Maps.

Futurama Title Card Collection

I love this show because it, just like The Simpsons, always has something different during the opening title sequence. On The Simpsons it’s the couch gag, Bart’s chalkboard sequences, and Lisa’s sax solo, and on Futurama it’s the opening title (among some billboard changes as they’re flying through the city). Here’s a Flickr gallery of all the opening titles on the show.

Speaking of Futurama, there are rumors that there will be new episodes created exclusively for DVD

Fun Flash Game

Haven’t had enough time to play it and figure out what all the various squares mean and do, but this should keep you busy for a while.
