Pictures That Lie

I’ll just quote the first page of this:

This photo isn’t exactly what it appears to be–nor are the other images that follow in this photo gallery. All were manipulated beyond straightforward cropping of edges or lightening shaded areas. Often they have a key element inserted or deleted.

While I had seen and known about most of them, there were a couple that I hadn’t seen before.

Fox News Has That Effect On Me, Too

Watch closely as they switch cameras on this — somebody’s sleepy.

This Is Totally Screwed Up

This is how paranoid our world has gotten. A woman brings hand lotion (now a banned item) onto an international flight and ends up getting the plane escorted to a different airport by two fighter jets. Yeah, she may have been a little disruptive (she was claustrophobic, for cripes sakes — not an uncommon thing on a plane), but for crying out loud, this has just gotten out of hand.

Remember, there is only one way to insure you have a hassle-free flight.d

You Thought You Had a Bad Couple Weeks?

Sorry to say, but Jon and his wife have you beat. First their daughter had to have eye surgery (which will cost a pretty penny). Then, Jon’s wife had to have her gall bladder removed (which will cost a pretty nickel). Then Jon’s goes to work this morning, and gets in a three-car accident on Franklin, bashing up his car pretty good (which just sucks). He came out OK (at least he says), but it still is a lousy way to start the day. They have insurance, but that doesn’t mean it’s not going to drain them.

Our thoughts are with you, Jon (we old-time original bloggers in the area watch out for each other). If you or your wife need anything, you know how to get ahold of me.

Some People Have Too Much Time On Their Hands

The Oregon State Linux Users Group decided to celebrate Firefox’s 200-million downloads by creating a 45,000+ crop circle up in Amity (just outside of Portland). Read more at their project page.

And actually, now that I look at some of those pictures, I recognize one of the guys in there. Hello, Jeremy!

KTVZ to Buy KFXO

This is very interesting, never thought I’d see it coming, and comments are welcome. Apparently that was a story that went across the KTVZ 5 o’clock newscast (I was at work), but local station KTVZ‘s parent company is going buy KFXO (only just a few months after they started their own 10 PM newscast). Anybody catch it or have more info? I’m running out the door here, but I’ll update this as I hear more later.

Update at 9:40: Just so you know I’m not just winging this, I heard from somebody who actually works at KTVZ that this was broadcast on the 5:00PM news. I missed the 6:00PM news, and it’s still too early for the 11:00PM news, so I haven’t personally verified this (would love to hear somebody who did watch it). I can’t find any corporate press releases anywhere about it.

That being said, assuming this is true, it’s a good move. They can combine their news staffs, as I prefer Peter Murphy and Kathy Cullis on KFXO’s broadcast (even if the broadcast itself isn’t all that polished compared to KTVZ’s). It’s also a good move from a sales standpoint, as they’ll be able to sell both stations’ ad space.

It’s also probably a pre-emptive move, as the other station that’s coming to town (someday) just hired a news director and will obviously have a news cast, will be seeking local advertising dollars, etc… . They know that the group funding the incoming station has money, so they expect competition. If they can eliminate some of it now, all the better.

Again, if anybody has official word, links, video of the story (wish I had a Tivo), whatever, let me know.

Update on 8/17: Official press-release from KTVZ.

The Greatest Software Ever Written?

This guy’s take is that BSD 4.3 was the greatest software ever written, and based on his arguments, I would tend to agree with him.

Google Maps Flight Sim

This is a fun little Flash game, and with a bit of work you can make it fly around any city. So for example, here’s a flight around Bend (just hit start). The imagery for Bend isn’t great as you can’t zoom in as tight as many areas, but it’s certainly better than it used to be.

MTV Now Owns A Bunch Of College Newspaper Sites’ Domains

Sorry I didn’t hit on this earlier this month when this news first hit, but I’ve been busy.

Many years ago, I worked for a company that provided an online content management system for folks. When we started taking on a ton of college newspaper clients, we spun those of into another company that eventually became another company who then sold management of over a hundred of its college newspaper clients to another company (long after I left there).

The thing is that now, the parent company of that other company has been bought out (official press release) by MTVU, an MTV Networks-owned channel geared toward college students. While this would be fine and dandy, from the little bit I know about College Publisher, I know it registered a lot of the domains in their own name, meaning that the domains for many of these sites are now the property MTV/Viacom.
