BendBlogs Feed Hosed

If anybody is subscribing to the BendBlogs.com RSS Feed at this URL, it’s not available at that URL thanks to a software upgrade and is now at this URL. I’ll setup a redirect later today, but I’m running out of the office as we speak.

An All New BendBlogs.com

Nearly a year ago when I started BendBlogs, I had grandiose dreams of a great site with timely information, great speed, searchable, RSS feeds, etc…. Unfortunately, that never became much of a reality because of the limitations of working with the software I chose, and really not able to find time to replace it or hack it to make it work how I wanted it to. The site has grown to over 130 blogs from around Central Oregon, and with its growth the limits of the previous software were starting to show.

Then yesterday after thinking about the site, I decided to search around again for solutions, and found a great one. So it gave me a chance to clean up totally dead feeds and rebuild the thing. Obviously it still needs a bit of work (as it’s mostly the stock template with some hacks, and I need to implement a few other features), but here’s the all new Bend Blogs. Among the new features:

  • AJAX-Powered so things load quickly and intuitively.
  • Full text search (soon — fixing something with that, but look for the form on the top of the page soon).
  • RSS feed for not only the entire directory but for every page on the site (click on the “RSS” link on the bottom of the page for the URL).
  • Cached archive of local blog posts.
  • Ability to tag entries (with RSS feeds for those tags). For example, I just tagged Shannon’s latest post, and it’s instantaneous (and you guys can submit tags, too).
  • Nice, clean URLs that Google will love.
  • Clean code that is standards compliant.
  • Updates cleanly every hour (with a much better caching system).
  • Totally MySQL powered, giving me the ability to manipulate the data if need be.
  • And a large community of developers and resources.

Obviously, I still need to do some work on the site, and many features on there are totally messed up in Internet Explorer 6.x (I haven’t tried the 7.x beta, but I know it works fine on a real browser). On my to-do list:

  • Get the search bar on there.
  • Get navigation figured out and added (as I just temporarily commented out the system that came with it, as it gave the general public a bit more power than I wanted).
  • Shrink down things just a tad, especially in the feeds source list and the main header <H1> text, so it’s not so big.
  • Adjust the color scheme so it’s a bit easier on the eyes.
  • Get Google adsense ads on there (gotta pay for hosting somehow, folks).
  • Get some photography as the background of the header area (similar to ORblogs.com’s city page for Bend). I’ll be e-mailing a few of you for submissions, and credit will be given, of course.
  • Edit the template and stylesheets to pieces to fit future needs.
  • Fix the time so it reads in non-24-hour time (I prefer AM/PM, thank you).
  • Re-implement some trimming code so that long titles such as this don’t screw up the page.
  • Figure out why some URLs are using mod_rewrite, and some aren’t (see the links on this page).
  • Sort feeds list by latest updated.
  • Add a “Submit” and a “Removal” request forms, as well as FAQ, About, Contact, etc…. (which was on my previous to-do list for the site).
  • More to come, I’m sure….but it’s late, and I’m braindead…

So go check it out, and comment here if you notice anything or have a feature/bug that should be added to my to-do list (or notice any blogs that I’m missing).

Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy!

Honey, we’re home. We’re no longer banned. Thanks a ton, Matt!

And by the way, Spencer:

Pagerank utterlyboring.com: 6

Pagerank bend.com: 5

There’s Hope After All

My blog post on getting banned by Google is now getting noticed by Google employees (read the final couple comments), so hopefully I’ll get back in their index soon enough.

Sorry Mailing List Readers

Add another to my to-do list when I move to a new server: turn off the automated sending of mailings from the old server. This has been fixed, so you won’t be receiving duplicates any more.

Server Move Coming, Comments Off

I’m temporarily turning off comments on this site so I can move it to a new server. I’ll reopen them and update this entry when the server move is complete.

Update: If you’re reading this, the server move was complete. I’ll be enabling comments (and posting more details) later.

Update again: All my sites have been moved to this box, which is less crowded than the last one. More details to come down the road as to why I needed a seperate box. Bugs have been worked out (had to tweak some PHP configurations, but nothing too exciting). Comments will be enabled in a couple minutes (though I have enjoyed the silence).

Getting Banned By Google Sucks

If anybody looking at this site has the Google Toolbar, you’ll notice something odd about this site: It has a PageRank of 0 — Zero, zip, nada, nothing. I used to have a PageRank of seven (at least according to the toolbar, which I know isn’t totally accurate). But if you also notice, Google doesn’t have anything on my site indexed.

Basically, my site no longer exists, according to Google.

Experimenting With Yahoo Publisher Ads

A long while ago I was invited to the beta of Yahoo!’s publisher network. I’ve just now gotten around to signing up for the beta, playing around with things. I haven’t implemented their ads on the main part of this site yet, but I have implemented them in my RSS/Atom feeds. I think that’s only fair, considering that my RSS feeds include my entire entries (and always will) and they’re fairly small ads (as of right now, they’re not even showing up in the feed, so they might not even be delivering ads anyway).

I’m mostly just testing it out to see how it works. If they suck, then I won’t leave them in there. If you even notice them, and have opinions, feel free to share them here.

Input Needed On Community Portal Software Packages

For those who know me, you know I’m working on a couple community sites to compliment the Bend Blogs site. I’m finally getting to the point where I really want to attack this and get a better presence for all the domains I own, and get a good community site setup, and am starting to look at software to pull this off.

If you have a developer mind at all, or know of any good software packages to pull of what I’d like to do, read on. I know I’m taking a risk making this public, but I may have found somebody to help pay for this project (as I know I’m going to need a bit of help), so it’s a risk I’m willing to take. Read On….

Mailing List Fixed

This has probably been down for a week or so after last week’s traffic storm, but I didn’t catch it. The subdomain dada.utterlyboring.com (which hosts my mailing list) got bulldozed a bit, so you haven’t been able to sign up. You can now sign up again, using the form on the right side of the page. Thanks debbiet for pointing that out for me!
