Goodbye Reading Rainbow

After 26 years, Reading Rainbow is off the air. I grew up watching and loving the show that LaVar Burton created and hosted all these years. On LeVar’s Twitter account, he asked people to share their favorite episodes, and people came out. LaVar thanked folks the best way he could:

Thanks to all who shared their favorite episode of RR today! When one door closes. another opens..But you don’t have to take MY word for it!

OK, So I’ve Sort Of Embraced Twitter

While my personal Twitter status will pretty much always remain in its current state, I know some folks have given up on RSS feeds as a means of keeping track of blogs. While I’ve had the e-mail notification option for quite a while and I even have a mobile option, I’ve found that many folks are not surfing the Web unless they find it via Twitter or Facebook.

So I’ve created a UtterlyBoring.com Twitter profile, and am using TwitterFeed to feed it. Then I’m using the Selective Twitter App to pull them into my Facebook status update. I’m not using the regular Facebook Twitter app for this purpose ( though I know it can do this same thing) as I don’t want my Facebook status updates — on the rare occasions I make them — to show up in my UtterlyBoring.com twitter feed. I plan on keeping my personal twitter empty.

This post is mostly a test to make sure the whole thing works.

I’d been using the notes feature in Facebook to post blog posts automatically from my RSS feed, but it was just pulling my full site’s content and not making the link back here real obvious. I’m trying to get people to realize that there is a Web outside of Facebook.

(Full disclosure, too: Obviously ad revenue is down for everybody, and I have to pay for my server that hosts this site and Bend Blogs, so any way I can get people here and clicking on ads is always good. This is part of that.)

I Fear For The Human Race

This makes me want to cry a little bit…

Outsourced Tech Support People Are Idiots

A co-worker was having trouble with our Toshiba laptop. She was having trouble getting her laptop on her WiFi at home, after it had worked before. Since Qwest said it wasn’t their problem, she would need to call Toshiba. It was a bit over a year old, so technically out of warranty, but she figured she’d call Toshiba anyway. She went back and forth, trying a bunch of things, following his broken-english instructions, with Toshiba even suggesting a full restore on the system which would’ve killed all here data and programs.

She brought it in to me, and sure enough, I couldn’t connect to any WiFi networks, either. It wasn’t detecting any networks, so the thing was getting disabled or something. And sure enough, the tiny little WiFi power switch next to the USB ports on this particular laptop was turned to “Off.” Flip the switch to “On”, and look at that, it magically works.

Now I didn’t expect my co-worker to see that switch (it is quite small), nor to know what it does (she does now), but why on earth didn’t the Toshiba tech suggest to look at that switch?

If You’re Going To Photoshop Your Real Estate Listing…

…I’d recommend you actually use Photoshop, and not MS Paint.

Update on 7/30: It looks like they replaced the photo on the listing. The one that was there before is here:

These Are The Commercials I Love

The ones that bring out so much emotion. This Thai Pantene television commercial is brilliant (even if not necessarily the most effective advertising for the product):

Thanks Barney for the link.

The Pirate Bay Goes Legal

The Pirate Bay is being sold, undoubtedly to pay its huge legal fees. It plans on decentralizing its operations, probably to protect itself a bit in the future. For an interview with the Pirate Bay founder, read up here.

I used the Bay’s tracker for a variety of purposes — anybody have any recommendations where else to look instead?

Billy Mays Found Dead

First the greatest late night side kick, then one of Charlie’s Angels, then the King of Pop, and now the king of the infomercial.

While there are no signs of foul play, I’d take a long hard look at the Sham Wow guy.

Our System Is Screwed Up

According to the RIAA and our court system, one illegally downloaded song is worth over three dead relatives.

I Normally Avoid Political Issues…

…but Fox News, this is just stupid.
