Anybody Else Having Trouble With Ten-Digit Dialing Today?

I mentioned a few months ago that we were going to be required to go to 10-digit dialing here shortly, and today was the day. The problem? It doesn’t appear to be working right, as I’m having trouble making calls to some local prefixes, whether it’s going through our digital PBX, my cell phone, or an analog line. Naturally, I try to call my local rep for support on this stuff, and I can’t get through with or without the area code or adding a “1” in front of the number — get getting 10-digit dialing errors. The homes we rent are having trouble making calls, too, which means it’s probably a Qwest problem. Calling Qwest is all but useless as it’s impossible to get ahold of a local tech — you’re forced to go through their national office in Denver. And since our phone service is with somebody else anyway, they wouldn’t talk to me.

Anybody else having issues?

Update: On a completely unrelated side note, our T1 line for our phones goes through RIO Networks. They used to be available at RIO.com, but their site doesn’t look the same any more as it used to. Looks like RIO Networks still owns the domain, so maybe they cashed in with the Olympics in Rio in 2016. Can’t say that I blame them on that one. They can still be found at RIONetworks.com, it appears.

Update 2: Just got off the phone with RIO’s after-hours tech, and they said they’ve gotten a few calls from the area today, and had heard that Deschutes County government offices were having issues with making calls today too (he had mentioned the Sheriff’s office, but this is all obviously hearsay). He got another phone call from the area while he was on the phone with me, said he’d call me back. I’ll update if I know or find out anything.

Update 3 (an hour later): Still waiting to hear back from RIO, but I forgot to mention: We’ve been using 10-digit-dialing here at the office for quite a while, trying to get people into the practice of doing it. Our fax machine has had the 10-digit numbers programmed into it for weeks, so it’s been working fine prior to today.

Update 4: Apparently, at the very least, call forwarding in the area has been buggered up pretty good by Qwest, at least according to RIO, and now that I think about it, that may be the source for many of the problems I’ve been having. When we moved into this new office, we got a fancy new Mitel IP phone system, and basically had our old analog call-in phone numbers forwarded to our T1 line here at the office (basically having the analogs setup on started POPs and then directed to our T1). It was done seamlessly, so we had no idea it was happening. Since this is the weekend, many of the offices I’ve been trying to call today have been after-hours forwarded numbers, and the numbers either haven’t been forwarded properly, or folks forgot to reset their forward so it was using 10-digit dialing and not just seven-digit. The folks I’ve talked to at RIO and our PBX provider said that there have been issues all over the area with this, including the Camp Sherman Fire folks, and that folks from the various PBX providers around the area are on-site in several locations. All-in-all, a nice little mess for a Sunday afternoon.

Update 5 (the next day): Talked to our PBX and line providers today, there are still problems all over central Oregon with this changeover. We’re not having nearly as many issues today as we did yesterday, but we still are having issues on occasion.

Yet Another Thing For Bend To Be Famous For

We’re home of the first-ever National Beard and Moustache Championships (mostly because we have a lot of breweries in the area). Be sure to read the Bulletin story for the photo, as it’s priceless.

Anybody Have An iPhone in Bend? You Getting 3G?

I’ve heard it through the grapevine that while AT&T isn’t supposed to be launching the iPhone in Central Oregon until early next year, they’ve already turned on some 3G coverage in Bend. Anybody in the area have an iPhone that can confirm (and where in town they’re getting it)?

Classic Central Oregon Cyclocross Footage

It was only briefly mentioned in the articles about Bend hosting the Cyclocross nationals last week, but Central Oregon has hosted the event before. Back in 1976, Sunriver (just south of Bend) hosted the Cyclocross nationals, and some classic video of the event has been posted online recently:

Back then, they basically took road bikes, changed the brakes to cantilever style, put on a beefier fork and some better tires and called it good. Now they make bikes dedicated to the sport.

I really wish I could have seen some of the event this last weekend, as I think it’s a great sport to watch (probably even more fun to ride in), but I had family events and work to do all weekend.

(Update: Couldn’t spell this morning — misspelled Cyclocross in the headline, and obviously spell check doesn’t pick it up.)

It’s Like A Heat Wave!

Yes, I know you’re probably sick of me saying how cold it is in Central Oregon. It was only -6°F this morning at my house (though it did get into the minus-teens overnight, apparently). I do geek work for several property management companies in Sunriver, and I’m hearing a very similar story: frozen pipes all over the place. I’ve heard stories of failing furnaces in more than a dozen homes, causing really cold homes. Some have been caught and fixed before it got too cold, but there are still many homes that have frozen pipes (including my boss’).

I heard of one homeowner here in Sunriver who refused to have his property management company blow out his sprinkler system — “I can do it myself, I don’t want to pay you to do it.” There are lots of homeowners in this area like that, sadly. He never did (he lives hundreds of miles from here, as do most of the homeowners out here), nor did he turn off his sprinkler system timer. It somehow managed to not freeze and sprayed a nice sheet of water all over his back yard, where it then froze, and then the water that was coming out of the sprinklers just ran down the street instead, creating a nice little skating rink.

Stay warm, folks. More links later today.

22 Below

It was only -13°F this morning at my house, but it was a balmy -22° at my co-worker’s house in Sunriver this morning. The SROA weather station had the low at its office at -19°F overnight (it’s gotten up to -5°F at my office — here comes the heat wave!). La Pine and Sunriver-area schools were cancelled and there were power outages in some areas. Thank goodness I don’t rely on electric heat in my home.

In other words, it’s frackin’ cold out. You whiners in Portland who are complaining about the cold up there (it’s currently 24°F up there), you got nothing on us.

There’s no sense in leaving the house if you don’t have to. This will help to keep you indoors today.

Stay warm!

I Can’t Feel My Toes

I got up this morning and it was 1°F on our front porch (that’s -17°C to the rest of the world), and in the last few hours, it’s gained a total of two degrees. It’s just bitter, bitter cold out. I just got my hair cut, so it’s especially nippy on my newly thinned head. My house has actually has more snow than my office, though it is about the same temperature out here. The wind-chill is supposed to bring the temps down even more tonight, into the minus-teens range. Thank goodness we have plenty of firewood.

I do want to personally thank the folks who made it out to our band concert yesterday. The weather was really awful with snow blowing sideways because of really stiff winds. The parking lot at Summit High School was well-buried to the point where you couldn’t even see the curbs, causing many folks to drive over curbs as they were the same level as the pavement in some spots. We had a pretty good turn out considering, and I could only imagine what kind of turn out we’d have if the weather would have cooperated. Those of you who didn’t make the trek, you missed a helluva show — though with the weather the way it was, I honestly don’t blame you. Many of the band members had trouble getting there, too, but as they say, the show must go on.
