Lots of Local Clicks

Just for kicks, I looked through some of the totally meaningless click totals on some of the posts from some of the local bloggers over on ORblogs, and I think it’s official: Jon has by far the most clicks on a single post with 65 clicks (as of this writing) on his post about the local Donald Trump urban legend. That topic also garnered Shannon 11 clicks on a related post. The most I’ve ever done was 30 clicks on a post entitled “Don’t Have Sex With The Babysitter” which goes to show you what people will click on over there. For other locals, it looks like Grumpy Forester had a 20-click post, Jon got 14 on his brew site, and Chris got 11 on one of his.

I also looked at the overall post click total for each of our sites, and it looks like the top-five rounds up like so:

  1. UtterlyBoring.com: 3,362
  2. Jon (Combined between his two sites): 873
  3. Chris: 301
  4. Grumpy: 229
  5. Shannon: 190

Now, if you think I have a lot, realize I have nothing on Jack Bog whose sitting at 4,428 post clicks. I have no idea if he has the most post clicks on there (I’m sure you know, Paul), but he certainly has to be pretty close to the top.

On a semi-related note, I added several more blogs and journals to BendBlogs today and plan on updating the site to a updated version of the software and some point, and hopefully hacking together an RSS feed for the thing. We’ll see how it goes and how much time allows (in other words, don’t hold your breath). I do need to clean out some dead links, but that’s another project for down the road.

OneEighty Bend Gets Bought By Unicom

Did I miss this in the local paper? I happened upon this Spokesman Review article that says that OneEighty (formally known as Highspeed Communications, formally known as EmpireNet, formally known as a guy whose name I completely forgot running a BBS out of his basement) is selling it’s Bend and Madras branches to Unicom. OregonTrail, I’m assuming, is part of that deal as well (as they were bought up by OneEighty).

Personally, I haven’t dealt with any of those companies for quite a while (I have had to deal with OneEighty on behalf of a client, but it was on minor issues that are probably going to get much more complicated now). I did have to deal with OregonTrail when I first started working at Sunray, as they hosted Sunray’s site (long since moved) and they were a bit of a pain to deal with as they didn’t know much about hosting, it seemed.

I also know there are some folks locally who are getting free hosting from OneEighty in return for links back to the company’s site — are those folks going to get booted?

So who does that leave in Central Oregon for Network/Data Center providers? Other than BendCableBroadband, who else is there? It seems most of the smaller ones that used be around have disappeared.

Update: I’m an idiot. Now I know why it’s not in the Bulletin — it probably ran two months ago when the actual purchase happened. So not only am I not on the ball, but The Spokesman Review is quite a bit late to the game, too.

Ugh…I need more free time to keep up on this stuff…

Can You Identify This Purse?

I occassionally read through Ask ORblogs, which is like a localized version of AskMeFi. This question caught my eye as it sounds like something a reader of this site might know (and I’m just copy/pasting the question here, so don’t blame me for the errors)…

I bought this purse in TN and it has a horse logo embossed over jwm derr Bend oregon USA.Does anyooone know anything about jwm derr? It is a really nice hand crafted leather purse.

Can anybody help him? Either comment over there or here.

The Bulletin Gets Lambasted By Mac Fans

All it took was one sentence in the Bend Bulletin calling Microsoft innovators, and the Mac fan boys had a field day with it. Here was the actual sentence from the story:

When Apple Computer created the iPod, Nike created the waffle-soled running shoe, Microsoft launched Windows and NASA put a man on the moon, they clearly were innovating.

Obiviously, that made the Mac folks angry

We’ll rewrite the sentence correctly now: “When Apple Computer created the Mac and the iPod, Nike created the waffle-soled running shoe, and NASA put a man on the moon, they clearly were innovating.” There, that’s much better.

My guess is the reporter isn’t a die-hard geek, and was probably getting that anecdote directly from the guy they’re profiling in the story, but it’s still hilarious to me how folks on both sides of this will just freak out sometimes to defend their platform.

It’s A Small Town

But Central Oregon has it share of folks with different sexual interests. And apparently some of them are looking for love online. Link via my NetNewsTracker.

Advice On A Portland Trip

I don’t need the advice (I am going to Salem and Newport for a few days next week on a much needed vacation, however), but an online buddy of mine is heading to the area and wants some advice from some bloggers in the area. Can anybody help him?

We Still Have More Stuff To Get Rid Of

We had our garage sale today and despite selling nearly $200 worth of stuff, we still have quite a bit to get rid of. So we’re extending it another day, and will be up at the crack of dawn on Saturday morning to get rid of what’s left. So what actually is left? We still have a futon, a BBQ, a chair, a ton of baby/toddler toys, a CD rack, and a bunch of other knick-knacks. Be sure to come by before all the die-hards clean us out in the morning.

3rd Bend Slideluck Potshow

Simone is organizing another local Slideluck Potshow. If you’re a local photographer, or have any interest in photography and seeing other people’s work, then be sure to make it to this event.

Interested? Read on for the details from Simone (who really should post this on her blog)…

We Need Your Help

I need every Oregonian out there to read this. My wife’s uncle, who lives in Sisters and shall remain nameless for right now, has gone missing. Now this is all hearing third-hand from my wife (as talking to her family right now is impossible), so bear with me for the lack of detail. Apparently he came home from work early today, grabbed a tank of propane and drove off in his older flame-painted black Jeep Cherokee. Nobody has a clue where he is.

Right now, I don’t have the license number for the car (I can’t get a hold of family as they’re out in the woods looking for him), but will update it if I get it. But if you have seen an older (Mid 80s, Black, Flames on the side) Jeep Cherokee driving around the highways, please contact the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office or e-mail me using the form on this site.

Update about 5 minutes later…: Figures, the minute I post something, the phone rings. The DCSO found him, apparently he was trying to do himself harm with the propane tank (he has tried stuff like this before, which is why they were worried). He was found unconcious out in the Three Creeks Wilderness, and is being taken to SCMC as we speak for treatment.

Update the next morning…: OK, after talking to my father in law this morning, I’m getting a bit more of the story. So far, here’s how the story goes…The uncle was found at a campground up on the McKenzie pass. He was actually reported by some campers that the uncle was talking to while he was up there. The campers found it odd that a man was up there with no tent or anything and didn’t even look like he was planning on camping. The campers wondered what happened when he walked off later without saying much. After looking around a bit, they found him locked up in his Jeep, letting propane leak into the cab. They broke the window of the Jeep to get him out and called the police, who weren’t really too far away at that point. He was rushed off to SCMC and is there right now. My in-laws are going over to the hospital later today to see how he’s doing and hopefully get him some help (as this is apparently the second time he’s tried this and was caught before finishing the job). I really hope he does get some help, or at least allows other help him.

Central Oregon Athlete Blog

Leave it up to Josh to get into blogging so much that he created a second blog — one dedicated to Central Oregon Athletes. Looks good, Josh, and it’s been added to Bend Blogs (which I really need to get an RSS feed and some CSS tweaks done on it — if only I had another 30 hours in a day).
