The Friday Five – Sports

’tis been a while since I’ve done one of these, so what the hell.

1. Do you watch sports? If so, which ones?

I don’t watch much sports. I like to watch college sports, primarily, as pro sports are full of greedy pricks who are more interested in money than the game. Whiners. I watch the Ducks play whenever I can — usually football or basketball.

If I have a choice, I’ll watch a track meet at Hayward Field any day of the week. That place is, bar-none, the best American venue for track and field.

2. What/who are your favorite sports teams and/or favorite athletes?

Like I said before, I’m a Duck fan, but I’m also a fan of good runners — high school, college, elite, whatever. I like to watch the progress of folks I could beat at one point or another who have now because stud runners. Haile Gebrselassie is a stud, and I love watching him run. I also love watching other endurance sports, and was glued during the Tour de France.

I also really like watching billiards/pool, but that’s because I like to play it.

3. Are there any sports you hate?

Like I said before, most of the major pro sports annoy the hell out of me. I quit watching the JailBlazers years ago, despite being a big fan as a kid. I don’t like watching fishing/hunting things, either. I’m not against the actions of the sport, just watching it.

4. Have you ever been to a sports event?

Went to every Duck home football, basketball, and track meet that I could during my 4 years there. I went to a TrailBlazer game back when they were still good and not criminals (Porter, Duckworth, Kersey, Williams, Drexler, Robinson, and the rest of the good ol’ boys). But otherwise, just Duck stuff, and the occassional Pre Classic.

5. Do/did you play any sports (in school or other)? How long did you play?

I played Little League baseball from six-years-old until I got in to high school where it just was way to competitive. I road-bike raced for a couple years in 7th/8th grade. I got into running in the 8th grade, competed on a state and regional level all through high school, and then independently through college. I haven’t run as much lately because of back problems, but I prefer to run the longer distance nasty cross-country races. My motto: If I don’t cross the finish line bloody, dirty, and in pain, it ain’t running 🙂 The last hard-core races that I competed in before getting sick and injured were the MacDonald Forest 15K years ago and last year’s Hood To Coast. My goal is to get back into shape and run them again, but this time the longer races. I know I’ll never have the leg speed again to run the 4:15 mile that I ran in college, but if I can get back down to a 5:30, I could easily take that over quite a few miles. We’ll have to see.

’tis my wife’s birthday today

So I’ll be doing my best to pamper the crap outta her, with our limited budget. Needless to say, I won’t be blogging much today. She’s a whole 25 years old today.

I’d give you my wife’s e-mail address so you could e-mail her birthday wishes, but it’d probably freak her out if she got a bunch of e-mail from people she doesn’t even know. But those of you who do know her e-mail, feel free to send one her way.

What’s up with the Ortmans

OK, it’s been a while since I’ve updated everybody on what’s going on in the family life, so read on if you’re interested in that sort of thing.

Domains for sale

You know, I’m never going to use these, so does anybody want whoflungdung.net or webhostsinc.com? I own them both, and have no need for them.

You know how to contact me. Make me an offer.

Wanted: Some computer parts

I need some stuff for work, maybe you can help me out:

Memory: I need some PC100 ECC Registered 256meg RAM. Would prefer a good brand, as it’s going in a couple servers. I need at least 3 (prefer 5) sticks of this. If I can buy them all from one place to save shipping costs, let me know, but I’ll take whatever bits and pieces I can get.

CPU: I need a couple 500mhz Slot 1 PIIIs (or two matching of a higher speed, up to 600, as that’s as fast as these servers can handle). Having a heat sink isn’t entirely necessary, as I’m probably going to have to get a new one for them anyway (the Proliant 800/1600 that these are going into require some odd-ball heatsinks to fit in there, but send the heatsink along so I can see if I can jury-rig it).

Compaq Proliant Parts: I need some VRMs and the aforementioned heatsinks for the Proliant 800/1600. I’ll dig up the part number, if need be. I know I’ll probably have to hit fleaBay for these, but I figured I’d ask here, first.

You can contact me using the info here. If you need references, Heatware is under “orty“. Ebay feedback under “orty.com“.

Finally have SSL working at the office

After two-weeks of telling the folks at InstantSSL telling me the firewall at work was at fault, and me spending the entire two weeks telling them that my firewall isn’t at fault, they finally got onto the server themselves, and lo-and-behold, they screwed up. But it took them 48 hours to figure out how they screwed up. And it was what I was telling them all along: The root and trusted certs they sent me were screwed up, or the cert they generated for me was generated based on the wrong trust.

Sure enough, it was a combination of all of the above. Regardless, it’s working now, but feel free to tell me if you can’t get to this URL (or check out our office’s Web cam, if you’d like) with it being a trusted, nice, and happy SSL site.

Does this link work for you?

OK, I’m having trouble with a server here at work, and I’m 90% sure it’s a problem with the secure certificate on the server and not the firewall (like the guy at InstantSSL keeps saying it is). Head to this link. You’ll probably get SSL certificate errors, if it lets you through, but please post a comment and let me know if it lets you through and you see some standard disclaimer text. Please post with what browser and operating system (and versions) you are using so I can verify the problem. Thanks!

Update: If you can’t get to the above address (and you’ve tried a few browsers), try this one.

Obligatory Baby Pics

OK, I promise this is the last baby post for a while. I’ve gotten some pics and threw them online. Instead of trying to create some cool image pop up thing and posting it in this entry, I just posted them under my other domain, using Photoshop’s web gallery plug in.

So head over to: www.jakeortman.com/michelle to see the pictures.

Sorry about the quality on a few of them, but my Canon AE1 was set to ISO 400 when I actually had 800 loaded in there. I love old manual cameras, but they’re easy to screw up stuff like that. That, and that film had been sitting in there for quite a while, so several of the pics there were taken with Lydia’s point-and-shoot instead.

OK, now time to clear out my inbox now that I’m back at work.

Amazing…

It only took our baby three days to go through a jumbo pack (40) of newborn diapers.

I’m sure you really wanted to know that. Now you do. 🙂

More Normal Blogging Coming Next Week…I’ve got about 100 links that I’ve been meaning to post, but I needed a break first.

It’s a Girl!

Sorry for posting this later than in actually happened, but coming across a ‘net connection wasn’t really a priority for me the last couple days (and I couldn’t sniff any wireless access points inside our cement-build room). But on July 27th at 4:07 PM, another Ortman joined the family: Michelle Naomi Ortman, all 7 pounds, 11 ounces, and 20.75-inches of her. She was actually a bit taller than Hannah, but 6 ounces lighter.

Hannah is really excited to be a big sister. We had a t-shirt made for her that said “I’m a Big Sister” that we gave her on Sunday, and she was really excited about that.

The labor went really well for Lydia, much quicker and less work than Hannah’s. And since Lydia barely lost any blood and things went so well, nobody bugged us all night long so we could actually get some sleep. But I couldn’t be more impressed with Lydia. My wife is awesome! 🙂

Anyway, pictures are coming as soon as I get them developed and scanned (which will probably be at least a week). I’m off work until Sunday, but I’ll still try to blog periodically between cat-naps.
