Note To Self: Don’t Joke About Meth Habit Within Earshot of Rent-a-Cop

I know that’s an obvious headline, but anybody who knows me knows I’m a very sarcastic, outspoken person. It’s occasionally been known to bite me in the butt.

I generally got to the same grocery store here in Bend because their food is bar far the cheapest. I know the folks there, they all know me. I went there tonight in hopes of getting some Sudafed for my wife, who is having sinus problems related to her allergies. They no longer sell it at the store, because they were told they had to get rid of it in preparation for the pending move to require a prescription for the drug (one of the stupidest ideas I’ve ever heard — so I have to go pay a $25 co-pay to get a 3-buck drug? No thanks I’ll buy it online). So I, obviously jokingly, said to my cashier friend there (when asking about the location of the pills) “How else am I going to cook up my meth and feed my crack habit?” The cashier laughed, but the rent-a cop kept following me around the store — subtly, but he was certainly keeping an eye on me, like I was just going to go nuts and start killing people because I didn’t get my fix.

Yes, meth is certainly a serious problem, and while I know that, I now know better than to joke about my decongestant of choice. I’ll just go to Costco and buy the bucketload of it before they get rid of it, too.

Home Improvement Craziness

My parents, for many years, have always given us gifts of labor (my parents working, not hiring anybody) and materials for projects around the house that we are tremendously grateful for. My dad’s a contractor, and is good at a lot of things and does the bulk majority of the hard stuff (with my mom just making sure he keeps on task). Just the same, they helped us get this giant shed in our backyard moved to a better place so we could lay down a patio in its place. They helped us put up crown molding and paint our bedroom. They’ve helped us with a bunch of little things around the house.

The thing is, they’ll say they’re going to do something, and we have no idea when it’s actually going to be done. This isn’t a problem, generally, as they’re being generous, and we’re in no hurry for things. What usually happens is that they’ll just randomly call, out of the blue, and decide they’re going to come over and work on it. That’s what happened yesterday…

Need Suggestions On Good Time Tracking Software

As of next week, I’ll be basically getting my paycheck from three different companies here in Sunriver. It’s a long story, really. While the first company linked will be the ones actually signing my paycheck (like usual), I’ll be doing a crapload of work for the other two as well, and I need to track my time appropriately so that my employer can make sure things are billed out appropriately.

Does anybody have any suggestions on project and time tracking software? I have access to the various Microsoft products (Project, for example) and the time tracking functions in Quickbooks. I’d prefer something that would either integrate with either Outlook or Quickbooks, as I work in both of those quite a bit (preferbly Outlook — haven’t really had a chance to play with Quickbooks time tracking functions, but I have them here if need be).

Anybody have any suggestions? Cheap is always good, but free is even better.

Back Online

If you’re wondering where I’ve been, I’ve been nursing a bit of a cold, chopping a bunch of wood so we could actually keep warm during this nasty cold weather (I think we might have gotten up to 17 degrees today), and been recopying data back to my laptop that had to be repaired. The laptop’s all back and happy and nice, the wood’s been chopped (and I got some ordered, too, as we’re basically out, and our furnace sucks), but my cold’s still sticking around. I’ll be getting some Nyquil down, and then I’m off to bed.

Meanwhile, I have been adding some new features and cleaning up some stuff over at BendBlogs, so be sure to check some of those out (and I have found some more sites that I plan on adding over there at some point).

An All New BendBlogs.com

Nearly a year ago when I started BendBlogs, I had grandiose dreams of a great site with timely information, great speed, searchable, RSS feeds, etc…. Unfortunately, that never became much of a reality because of the limitations of working with the software I chose, and really not able to find time to replace it or hack it to make it work how I wanted it to. The site has grown to over 130 blogs from around Central Oregon, and with its growth the limits of the previous software were starting to show.

Then yesterday after thinking about the site, I decided to search around again for solutions, and found a great one. So it gave me a chance to clean up totally dead feeds and rebuild the thing. Obviously it still needs a bit of work (as it’s mostly the stock template with some hacks, and I need to implement a few other features), but here’s the all new Bend Blogs. Among the new features:

  • AJAX-Powered so things load quickly and intuitively.
  • Full text search (soon — fixing something with that, but look for the form on the top of the page soon).
  • RSS feed for not only the entire directory but for every page on the site (click on the “RSS” link on the bottom of the page for the URL).
  • Cached archive of local blog posts.
  • Ability to tag entries (with RSS feeds for those tags). For example, I just tagged Shannon’s latest post, and it’s instantaneous (and you guys can submit tags, too).
  • Nice, clean URLs that Google will love.
  • Clean code that is standards compliant.
  • Updates cleanly every hour (with a much better caching system).
  • Totally MySQL powered, giving me the ability to manipulate the data if need be.
  • And a large community of developers and resources.

Obviously, I still need to do some work on the site, and many features on there are totally messed up in Internet Explorer 6.x (I haven’t tried the 7.x beta, but I know it works fine on a real browser). On my to-do list:

  • Get the search bar on there.
  • Get navigation figured out and added (as I just temporarily commented out the system that came with it, as it gave the general public a bit more power than I wanted).
  • Shrink down things just a tad, especially in the feeds source list and the main header <H1> text, so it’s not so big.
  • Adjust the color scheme so it’s a bit easier on the eyes.
  • Get Google adsense ads on there (gotta pay for hosting somehow, folks).
  • Get some photography as the background of the header area (similar to ORblogs.com’s city page for Bend). I’ll be e-mailing a few of you for submissions, and credit will be given, of course.
  • Edit the template and stylesheets to pieces to fit future needs.
  • Fix the time so it reads in non-24-hour time (I prefer AM/PM, thank you).
  • Re-implement some trimming code so that long titles such as this don’t screw up the page.
  • Figure out why some URLs are using mod_rewrite, and some aren’t (see the links on this page).
  • Sort feeds list by latest updated.
  • Add a “Submit” and a “Removal” request forms, as well as FAQ, About, Contact, etc…. (which was on my previous to-do list for the site).
  • More to come, I’m sure….but it’s late, and I’m braindead…

So go check it out, and comment here if you notice anything or have a feature/bug that should be added to my to-do list (or notice any blogs that I’m missing).

In Case Anybody Gives A Rip…

…I have a MySpace profile here. I didn’t even bother to setup an account until Snarky posted theirs and I didn’t want to be the last blogger in Central Oregon to have one (since everybody else already seems to have one). So if you want to add me as a friend, knock yourself out, but don’t expect me to ever post anything remotely useful on that page — I have this site for that (of course, that’s assuming that something on this site is remotely useful, but we just won’t have that discussion).

Anybody Know Any Plumbers That Owe You A Favor?

I’d like to talk to them.

Our washing machine has been back flowing and spilling water out of it’s drain on a fairly regular basis lately, to the point where we just keep a towel down there so we can actually get some laundry done. We tried putting Draino-type chemicals down there with no luck, and when I tried to run a snake down there, I couldn’t get very far, just hitting metal. So I thought I was just hitting a really bad angle.

So tonight, I finally got fed up, called my father-in-law (who does a lot of landscaping and irrigation plumbing) over and we tore the wall open so we could get to the pipes. Sure enough, we thought, the trap for the line before the drain was very tight and probably was having a problem with the water flow, so it was getting backed up (and that’s also what we were hitting with the snake). We went down to Lowes to get some new pipes, told the old nasty (and nearly 30 pounds worth) of steel pipes that were in there, hooked up some much easier-to-work-with PVC, and before we hooked it up, my father-in-law ran his snake into the sewer drain about 20 feet, hopefully clearing up anything that would be causing the backflow.

So we hooked it all back up, and I sent my father-in-law home as he was exhausted (he was at work early this morning). We ran a load, and water still came out of the drain. Ugh…back to the drawing board.

Plumber I am not, so plumber I will call. Anybody know anybody good and fair priced or related to one that could help a guy out?

My New Toy Is Sick

My two-week-old toy is sick. It’s having trouble POSTing properly, and will randomly just shut down and not turn back on. There’s obviously some sort of funky hardware issue with the thing, so I’m sending it back and nipping it in the butt before it becomes a major issue. Just waiting for my RMA before I send the thing off via UPS. I have a feeling that it’s probably the RAM, but I don’t have a gig (or any, for that matter) of DDR2 SODIMM RAM stick sitting around (they’re not the easiest thing to get a hold of and I don’t keep them handy).

In the nine Sager notebooks I’ve personally dealt with, this is the first time I’ve had this happen. That being said, I was able to very easily open the thing up and get to the RAM, CPU, Hard Drive, MiniPCI cards, Video Card, and everything else so if I have a problem or want to upgrade in the future to new video, RAM, or CPU, it’s going to be stupidly easy.

Meanwhile, I’m back on my old laptop (P4 1.6ghz with 4200 RPM hard drive and 512 megs of RAM that’s shared with the video card). It’ll get the job done, but I certainly do miss my baby.

I Need A DVR

I wish I had a few extra bucks so I could either a) Build My Own DVR or b) Sign up for Tivo (or for the DVR service through the local cable company). Why? Because I’m really sick of trying to record shows on tape.

Now understand, I hardly watch any TV. But there are two shows that I don’t like to miss: House and Monk. (On a side note, I really hate how Fox seems to enjoy putting four weeks between new episodes of House and instead puts up that obnoxious American Idol crap.). Friday night was a new episode of Monk, but the kids were sick and I had been up nearly all night the night before, so my wife and I decided to tape it and watch it later this weekend. So I programmed the VCR and went to bed.

So yesterday we fire up the VCR, play the tape, and get 10 minutes into the show, and the tape gets totally unreadable — no sound, and barely any video. So we clean the heads on the VCR, and it didn’t help — the tape was toast. I fast forwarded through the episode, and it came back so you could actually hear it about five minutes before the end, which didn’t do us any good.

So my next purchase when I’ve got money to blow? I’m getting a DVR, dangit. I probably will build one, as I like having that kind of customization ability (and I already have a TV tuner card I could throw in there). Meanwhile, if anybody has last Friday’s episode of Monk on tape (or digitally) that I can borrow so I can watch it, please let me know (e-mail me at utterlyboring [at] gmail [dot] com).

SanDisk USB Keys Are Awesome

I was looking all over for my SanDisk 256 MB USB key yesterday (yes, I know it’s small in the grand scheme of things, especially considering they sell a 4 GB version), as I didn’t want to have to use my external hard drive to move data between my old laptop and my new laptop — the USB key is so much more convenient. So I was a bit miffed when I couldn’t find it.

So I’m taking some clothes out of the dryer today, and lo and behold, there’s my USB key, after having just gone through a full wash and dry cycle. I thought the thing was hosed, but plugged into my computer, every bit of data is still on there and works like a charrm.

So if anybody’s looking for a durable USB key, I highly recommend the SanDisk.

Now I just need to get a bigger one for moving larger collections of files so I don’t have to use an external hard drive.

On a related note, I moved data from my old laptop to my new one with an old 20 GB laptop hard drive that I stuck in one of these enclosures (don’t let the cheap price fool you — these things are great). The problem is that moving about 12 GBs of data (all the stuff inthe “My Documents” folder) over a USB 1.1 connection (old laptop) is a slow experience. But it is very handy to have a 20 GB external hard drive at my disposal — but USB keys are still far handier.
