Wanna Place Any Bets?

The war has already begun in my neighborhood — really, it’s been going for days already. I have the TV turned up don’t have to listen to what sound like bombs going off every 30 seconds. Everybody already knows how I feel about this holiday, and even if I wanted to be out enjoying it, my youngest daughter is sick, so I’m home with her while my wife and other daughter are out having a good ol’ time.

While everybody’s out boozing and blowing stuff up, lest we never forget what this holiday is really about.

Anybody want to make any bets on percentage of the Butte that gets put up in flames this year? It was pretty hot and dry today, so I expect some flames.

Playing The Waiting Game

Our office internet connection is down at the moment (I’m typing this on my cell phone). Has been for over an hour and a half now. Naturally, I can’t do anything as 99% of what I do on a daily basis requires a net connection.

The cable company “is working on it” and there is also apparently a power outage in part of Sunriver that may be related.

Just wish my company had the extra money for a backup DSL line. Maybe this will convince them they need one.

These Things Come In Threes

I’m just scared to death to see what the third thing is.

Our minivan air conditioning has been making funny noises recently and not really working too well (which sucked in the heat wave a few weeks back), and a belt has been making some ugly noises. As we were driving over to the mechanic, the check engine light came on, so we had them check that, too. Belt was a cheap and easy fix (for a car repair), but the A/C problem is a big one: the condenser is leaking, which is an expensive repair ($600-ish, mostly labor), and that check engine light? Main computer is dying. They tried just resetting it, as sometimes the thing needs to be rebooted apparently, but that didn’t help, the light and code came right back on again. That computer dies, the whole car stops working. The labor to install/program the computer itself isn’t too bad (we would have to have it done at a dealer, but it only takes an hour) but the computer itself is $800. So $1500. Which I obviously don’t even remotely have. And the car’s not even paid off.

And our warranty that would cover this stuff? Expired 550 miles ago. We’ve put a bunch of money into this car, and I’m probably never buying a Caravan again (even though it’s really the only minivan I can afford).

I’m almost wishing somebody would run into the car and total it as we have comprehensive insurance on it (as it’s not paid off yet).

And my Hyundai check-engine light just came on this week, too, but I at least have a decent idea what that is. Still going to be a bit of a trick to figure out, but it’s not entirely impossible since my Hyundai doesn’t have nearly the computers and crap that the minivan does, so hopefuly I can self-help that one myself.

&lt:sarcasm>Just can’t wait to see what the third thing is,</sarcasm> since these things always come in threes.

I just wish I could afford a Honda, Toyota, or Subaru agailn. I loved my Subaru mechanic, but Subaru doesn’t make a minivan, and we have two kids and the occasional passenger or three as well (we’ll do stuff with family members and will carpool all in our rig). If I didn’t work in Sunriver I could just ride my bike to work, but the ride to Sunriver is not only long, but it’s really dangerous.

Oh well — at least I have a job (hopefully that won’t be the third).

Update: Searching on eBay, the an aftermarket PCM is a helluva lot cheaper and it looks like I might be able to replace it myself (as it’s really easy to get to). The condenser, while I can find it cheaper than the part quote, that thing is a bear to get at, it appears. Just need to find somebody who will put in a cheaper after-market part for me.

Concert Time

Like I’ve mentioned before, I have a concert tomorrow afternoon. It’ll be a good show, it’s free, and there will be munchies and drinks during intermission, so I’d encourage you all to come and scream and yell for your favorite local blogger. Or not, but do come and have a listen, tell all your friends, etc… .

Anybody Have Recommendations On A Small Business Credit Card?

I just got word this morning that Advanta, which was a highly rated small business credit card that I’ve used for years, is going under and is going to stop accepting transactions in a few days. I’ll have to find a new card ASAP to start running my business transactions through, and am looking for recommendations. Advanta had cash back, no annual fee, easy online management, and all that fun stuff. Any recommendations?

Anybody Have Indesign CS3?

I have a file that I need opened and saved down to Indesign CS2 using the directions here. Basically, I need it in an INX format. It’s not a complicated file, just a friend’s resume, and I’m trying to help them out.

E-mail utterlyboring [at] gmail [dot] com.

Update: Thanks for all the replies. Thanks Ricardo for taking care of this for me!

I’m Old(er)

At my office, we get two paid holidays: Christmas, and our birthday. So I’m taking today off for one of those two. Guess which one?

Feel free to send me large chunks of money. Or something. Get off my lawn.

Cascade Winds In Final Concert of The Season

I do this all the time — the cheap plug for the local concerts that I’m a part of. While I don’t know if anybody actually comes to the concerts based on my mentions (I’d like to think that somebody does), you’re still going to have to put up with it. Especially when this concert promises to be such a great show with music for everybody. And it’s free, so what have you got to lose?

For all the details click here or click on that big ol’ banner over on the right side of the page.

Update: As a commenter pointed out, there will be free munchies and drinks during intermission. Always forget about that, as I’m usually on stage prepping for the second half.

I’m A Bit Behind

I opened my RSS reader this evening to make an attempt to try to catch up on all the feeds I’ve missed over the last few weeks in the chaos I call my life, saw well over 3,000 unread posts. Forget it — I just marked them all as read and started over. I’m taking the Lazy Web approach, so if I’ve missed something over importance over the last few weeks in those various blogs, just comment below. Or not.

Daytime TV Sucks

I’m taking a four-day weekend (starting yesterday), since my wife is heading over the pass as we speak and somebody needed to stay with the kids. I’ve vowed to do nothing productive and to spend as little time as possible on my computer, other than to do a few things:

I also realized a couple things:

  • Daytime TV Sucks. There is absolutely nothing entertaining on (at least this time in the morning).
  • I could never be a single dad, as I suck at doing little girls’ hair to get them ready for school. My wife makes them look so cute, I have a high standard to live up to. I’d have to hire somebody just to come over every morning and doll them up.

I am glancing at my email periodically, avoiding work-related e-mail, in-case I have a server or something go down, but otherwise, I’m going to drown my self in laziness and fun with my girls when they get home from school. And am going to enjoy every minute of it.
