Stupidly Expensive eBay Auctions and Amazon Items

I always like periodically checking this page, as it’s basically all the items listed currently on eBay, sorted by highest price first. The current high item is a custom water-powered engine, running for a cool $60-million.

This, to go along with a crapload of really expensive Amazon items.

An Easter Scandal!

Cadbury is shrinking our Creme Eggs, and they’re denying it. But BJ Novak had the smoking egg, and he shared it on Conan:

There Was No Point In The Early Daylight Savings

The whole objective of the early daylight saving’s time was to reduce power consumption. In reality, it just caused some minor grief for the tech industry and saved no measurable energy.

Best Way To Describe Net Neutrality

Craig Newmark, founder of craigslist, describes the issue perfectly:

Most Americans believe that if you play fair and work hard, you’ll get ahead. But this notion is threatened by legislation passed Thursday night by the U.S. House of Representatives that would allow Internet service providers to play favorites among different Web sites.

Here’s a real world example that shows how this would work. Let’s say you call Joe’s Pizza and the first thing you hear is a message saying you’ll be connected in a minute or two, but if you want, you can be connected to Pizza Hut right away. That’s not fair, right? You called Joe’s and want some Joe’s pizza. Well, that’s how some telecommunications executives want the Internet to operate, with some Web sites easier to access than others. For them, this would be a money-making regime.

Ratings Reign Supreme When It Comes To News

America doesn’t care about real news. We’d rather hear about something stupid or sensational. The guy who runs Fark.com and makes his living off stupid news knows this and wrote a great commentary for the Christian Science Monitor about this subject. People care about crap news and not real news. For cripes sakes, Fox News devoted 12 times more coverage to Anna Nicole than Walter Reed (and this was nearly a month after her death), and while I have my feelings about the bias at Fox News, I still don’t think they would’ve done it had they not felt that it would get them better ratings.

I doubt we’ll ever see the day again where mainstream/major news outlets care as more about good newsgathering then they do ratings/visits to their site or channel. The best sources of news will be the small-town dailies and small-market news shows and blogs. Now if they just weren’t such a pain to find … .

“How To Spot A Jap”

This was your tax dollars at work here, folks. This comic book was given to our soldiers during World War II who were fighting in Asia and the Pacific so they could tell the different between Japanese and Chinese men (as we were friends with one, but not the other).

A Brief History Of Minesweeper

I was never one of those folks that got really into Minesweeper (once I completed the large board, I was done), but this full history is fascinating.

Development Link Dump

OK, I promise this will be the last link dump I do in a while. Really. I promise. Cross my heart. But basically here’s a pile of programmer, web development, and site promotion links.

OK, I’m done link-dumping for a while.

Trying To Decide Between XM and Sirius?

Don’t bother comparingthey’re going to merge, so I’d wait until things are combined a bit better first.

Holy Crap, I’ve Been Busy

Between buying stuff for my sweetheart of a wife (it‘s tomorrow, guys) to a crapload of work at my day job along with three concerts and two rehearsals, my week is going to be a mess (and it’s only Tuesday, and it’s already chaos). On the bright side, I got a new cell phone, so that’s always nice — too bad I haven’t had any time to play with it.

Meanwhile, I’ve been collecting links as usual, so to get some of them out of my link dump folder, here are a bunch of fun YouTube videos (after the jump).
