Step back to 1993 – Put Windows 3.11 on a single floppy

Granted, the only things installed are File Manager, Notepad, and Minesweeper, but still a pretty neat trick nonetheless. Thanks to Neil T. for the link. Sadly, I think I have original Windows 3.1 and DOS 6.0 install disks in my closet.

IT support sucks

Quoted from the site: In the world of IT support, some days are good, and some days are bad. This site is dedicated to the bad ones.

Funny site, especially the Fun with Regedit! game (just don’t call me later and say you destroyed your computer after playing it — THAT’S THE IDEA).

$2 trillion fine for Microsoft security snafu?

Ït will probably never happen, but Microsoft’s latest security lapse with its Passport information service could trigger a $2.2 trillion fine on the company courtesy of the US government. Full Story. Quoted: “Microsoft on Thursday admitted that a flaw in the password reset tool of its Passport service could compromise the information stored on all 200 million users. It scampered to post a fix and is looking into potential exploits, but the damage to Microsoft may already have been done.”

Sony makes Playstation 2 on one chip

From the Inq article: “Not long ago everyone was cooing at the achievement that was the Playstation 2. Its graphics chip and CPU seemed hugely complicated affairs. Indeed, there was a fear that they might be too complicated for programmers to get to grips with. Now, all of that complexity has been shoved onto a single piece of silicon. The new all-in-one chip will be produced on a 90nm embedded DRAM process. The Graphics Synthesiser will keep its 4MB of RAM onboard thanks to the process. The packaged chip will run at the 294MHz of the EmotionEngine, the CPU component of the Playstation 2.”

Screw the Playstation 3. It ain’t coming out until 2007 or so anyway. I’d like to see 4 of the Playstation 2 chips running in parallel in one box (they’ll use less power — the new one-chip solution uses 8-watts, while the two-chip solution used 37-watts), and then games would smoke (as the PS2 chip is already a really nice chip).

POPFile

Ok, I’ve posted this before, but my POPFile hit 99.01% accuracy today at the office.

The only false positives (legitimate email flagged as spam) I get now are poorly written requests for my companys advertising rates.

You can download POPFile for free here: http://popfile.sourceforge.net/. It works with most email clients, but not webmail.

Harvard Criticizes Google’s Adult Content Filter

Google admits the porn filter isn’t perfect but says the test wasn’t perfect, either. And the Harvard’s report didn’t compare Google’s filtering to the filtering done by other search engines, so, while it may not be perfect, and may very well be better than the others. Full Story on Search Day.
