Googleable Unsecured Web Cams and Printers

Anybody who likes to dig into and break things knows that Google can dig up quite a bit of stuff that people don’t realize. The latest trick? People are using Google to find unsecured Web and security cams (we’re talking Web cams that you can control, move around, zoom, etc…, potentially reading documents at an office).

Here’s the search links I’ve seen so far from here, here, here, here and here:

Many More Here

People are having a great deal of fun with this, watching people’s reactions in the camera as they’re watching as the cam is moving around, acting funny, etc… . And there are piles of people hitting the same camera, so you sometimes can just sit there and watch while people move the camera around. It’s pretty dang fascinating, and bound to make people around the world wonder what the hell is going on. Some of these things even have sound.

Google can be used to search for unsecured printers and other networks as well. Check out these two articles for more Google hacks. Some people are using these kinds of searches to find printers, as well (I know I’ve already found quite a few using URL searches based on some of the ones in our office that are Web accessible). I won’t even point to some of unsecured network switches I came across (based on the unique URLs as some of the ones in our office).

On a side note, anybody whose “private” or “office use only” networks or Web cams that show up on here need to fire their IT guy.

Update: Here’s an easy to use UI for browsing open cams (with Geographic information).

Mobile Blogging With MovableType

I really should get something like this setup so that if I ever get a stupidly fancy phone I could blog from it. Of course, I will probably never get a stupidly fancy phone, nor be able to afford the cell phone plan for said stupidly fancy phone, but I really should set it up. Really.

I’m mostly just posting this here in case anybody else is interested in it as I can’t remotely use it right now, but might in the not-so-foreseeable future.

Referral Spam

Is anybody else getting Referral Spam on their blog? I happened to check my referral logs for the month, and I’ve got a pile of faked referral hits from sites that have never linked to me (a bunch of DVD sales sites, some Poker sites, several sites that sell watches, etc…). I won’t give the URLs here because that would just give them more publicity, but looking at my AWStats page, most of my top 30 links from external pages are coming from spam sites, and I have a feeling it’s not helping the speed of my site.

Looking online, it appears I’m not alone in this. The reason? Because these folks are hoping your blog is running a script that displays that latest referrals to your site. So they’ll fake a referral link to have their link appear on your site (increasing their page rank, giving them a link, etc…).

Anybody have any solutions for blocking these morons, or am I just going to have to start turning off my referral logs (which I’d like to avoid, in case I ever feel the need to ego surf)?

Overclocking Your NES

The default clock speed on the thing is a whopping 1.79 MHz, but if you use the tips on this site, you might get a whopping 4 MHz.

Default Password List

I’m going to print this thing up and stick it in my computer repair toolbox, as I’m always asked by folks to troubleshoot their connections or network or something similar, and they’ve never changed the password. Or I’ll need to do a hardware reset on the thing, and then I’ll have to get back in using the default user/pass, and this will save me the trouble of having to look it up.

MovableType 3.14 Released

I’ve been using the beta version of this (will be installing the release version tonight), and I would recommend everybody download and install the newest version. There are some bugs that got fixed that will help your server load tremendously (especially if you’re getting pounded by comment spam).

I’ve Given Up On The MovableType Forums

This isn’t the first time I’ve posted questions in their forums before and not gotten a response, so I’m going to post the two questions here and see if anybody here running around the ‘net right now can help me. Read on…

Geek Joke

Why do maths geeks always get Christmas and Halloween mixed up?

Because Oct 31 is Dec 25.

(Please tell me I’m not the only one that actually gets that joke. Thanks b3ta for it.)
