US Gov’t Didn’t Think This One Through

The CIA has launched a taskforce to assess the impact of 250,000 leaked US diplomatic cables. Its name? WikiLeaks Task Force, or WTF for short.

Speaking of the WikiLeaks mess, this quote from EFF co-founder John Perry Barlow sums it up quite nicely:

We have reached a point in our history where lies are protected speech and the truth is criminal.

Could not have been said better.

The recent essay in The Atlantic entitled The Hazards of Nerd Supremacy: The Case of WikiLeaks is also worth a read.

Phallic Fun In The Snow

I always try to check my office web cam in the morning, mostly to see if my cam has survived another night fully functional (it’s dying a slow death, so sometimes it won’t make it 24 hours without needing to be reconnected to the host PC). This morning, a co-worker who was going there to check out the Mt. Bachelor conditions saw this image on the Sunriver Lodge web cam (owned and operated by KGW in Portland). Warning, NSFW if crude drawings of a man’s ding-a-ling offends you or your co-workers:

They’ve since scratched out the phallic symbol, but I can’t help but wonder how long it’s been on there and who was responsible for it.

Springfield Man Legally Changes Name To “Captain Awesome”

As a fan of Chuck, I’ve always thought Captain Awesome was one of the better characters on that show. A Springfield man is obviously a big fan, too, and had his named legally changed to Captain Awesome, though the guy hardly looks as awesome as his namesake.

Can’t Say I See This Working Out Well

Cookie Monster wants to host SNL:

Meanwhile, In Seattle…

We obviously have a huge pile of white stuff in Sunriver, but when Seattle gets just an inch of snow, things get stupid.

Great discussion on this mess on Reddit.

Everybody else surviving the weather/roads? I know it’s taken me a lot longer to get to/from work (took me an hour to get to Wal-Mart from Sunriver yesterday), and I’m still seeing a metric crapload of folks (mostly out-of-towners) flying down the road when they shouldn’t be. Saw several folks in the ditch this morning on the highway at angles and depths that would say they were going much too fast, and it’s hard for me to feel sorry for them (they weren’t hurt, just stuck out in the deep).

One Thing I Miss About Not Having Cable

I don’t miss the large bill that comes with having cable TV, but I do miss watching Top Gear and seeing crazy stuff like this:

Of course, TopGear has a ton of videos on YouTube so I’ll just get my fix this way.
