One of the things I liked about watching PBS when I was a kid was that they occassionally showed shows on how stuff was made. The machines in these factories, and how fast they did things, was always so fascinating to me. Leave it up to Stanford to put a pile of videos online that range from how jelly beans are made to how airplanes are made. I could spend my entire day here! Link from BBspot.

Find Font by Sight
OK, this is now on my bookmarks as one of my handy design tools. Have you ever looked at a design, and wondered what typeface it was? Or, in my case, I was looking at a design I did a LONG time ago, but no longer had the digital copy handy, so I didn’t know what typeface it was. Lockergnome’s Windows Daily came to the rescue with a great tool. Answer twelve simple questions about your mystery typeface, and there’s a good chance it’ll be able to identify your font.
RIAA’s tactics are going to bite them in the ass
If you didn’t already know, the RIAA (your favorite organization and mine) is suing everybody and their dog for sharing files online. Their tactics are bound to backfire. They’re already being counter-sued, and users are, generally, just ignoring the RIAA. The EFF is fighting for user’s rights, writing up guides on how to avoid getting sued. New versions of Kazaa Lite K++ block MPAA and RIAA IP blocks so you can share files without (hopefully) them finding out about it as easily, and you can even block them from coming to your site.
So is this hurting the RIAA more than it’s helping them? Hell yes.
If you’re going to make fun of a large corporation…
…make sure you at least have the fonts they use for their logos.
Planning on going to Greece for the Olympics?
More people might make the trip in 2004 if they knew that there would probably be more whorehouses.
Cheech and Chong, together again!
“That’s the famous Marquis du Hickey: legendary lover–makes Casanova look like a school boy. He’s a trisexual. Trisexual? Yeah, he’ll try anything, mud, chickens, anything.” Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong are doing another movie.
Lance Armstrong is a stud
He crashes 10K from the finish (a spectator caused it), but still wins today’s stage, putting a bit more distance on the folks in 2nd and 3rd place. Full Story.
How to block the RIAA and MPAA from accessing your site – UPDATE: And SpamBots, too!
Quoted from the site:
“Effective immediately, the RIAA and MPAA will need to find another way to get to Techfocus. In response to their legal targeting of individual file-swappers, access from their known networks to this site has now been blocked. While it may still be possible for them to access Techfocus via address ranges which we’re not aware of, they’ll otherwise have to use non-RIAA and non-MPAA networks to view the site.”
They state their reasons for doing it, and they’re all very valid reasons — which is why I downloaded the .htaccess file from the site and uploaded it on my server as well. While I have nothing to hide from either of those organizations (in fact, I’ve been very critical of the tactics they use), I’m not very fond of them, either, hence the block.
UPDATE: Neil has posted his .htaccess file, and it’s much more extensive, blocking spam bots and other lunatics as well. I’ve updated my .htaccess file as well.
UPDATE AGAIN: For some reason, I get an internal server error when I have all those items in there. Why, I don’t know, but I’ll look in to it. Meanwhile, I’ll just have to let the spambots and evil Hollywood folks in.
Donkey Kong player breaks world record with 947,200 points
This guy has WAY too much time on his hands, besting the 20-year old record, originally set by Billy Mitchell. He may be good at Donkey Kong, but can he fling a frog around in traffic and beat George Costanza’s Frogger record? Link from Obscure Store.
