I’ve Said It Once, and I’ll Say It Again…

…I do not control the entire Internet. Contrary to the popular belief of some of the folks I deal with on a daily basis (but don’t actually work for), if the Web site you’re trying to visit is down, and you haven’t tried visiting other Web sites, don’t blame me until you actually try some other Web sites. If you can’t get to any sites, then you can bug me. If I can get online, so can you. If I say the Web’s working fine, don’t sit there and waste more of my time (and my boss’ money) telling me it’s not.

(Yes, I know I’ve made a similar rant before, but it doesn’t hurt to reiterate it.)

The Dren says:

We love those tickets here, usually classified “Urgent” – “THE INTERNET IS DOWN!!!!!!!”
Open the ticket and there is no additional information.
Check, Internet is up and working.
Update ticket for user:
“No, it is not.”
Wait 30 minutes, the user will update their ticket:
“I cannot get to {problem domain.whatever}.”
Check the site, it is down.
Update ticket.
“Yes, it appears that site is down, however, the rest of the Internet seems to be functioning. We have no control of that site, I am relatively sure they are aware of, and fixing the problem on their end.”
Every week, no matter how many times we try to address this.
