That was news to me until Jon pointed out a bit of local history. I knew we have some other major tech company offices here. I know Bend has a small Intel office for a few local geeks, and obviously Orcom is frickin’ huge in the utilities industry, but it is cool to know about what other tech companies have done around here.

The jury’s still out on whether Bend “had” or “has” a video game company, depending on whether Sony Bend is still actually around.
There was another one, too, which is part two of this story which I’ll post tonight.
And don’t forget NeoSoft (http://www.neosoftware.com/), not a game company, but still going strong, as near as I can tell.
Oh yeah, I forgot about Neosoft! I used to use their Neopaint software back in the DOS/Win3.1 days. That software was sweet!
Yeah, Neopaint was one of the better DOS graphics programs I’d ever used. Never looked into Neopaint for Windows, though. Now I’m wondering what other software companies are around (aside from Orcom, Migration, etc…)
Migration doesn’t really exist anymore (at least not in Bend), and they focus more on Web stuff now (www.smartz.com). I know Avenir Systems does some custom software work, and a quick yellow pages search comes up with a few other companies that offer specialty stuff (www.obisoft.com, paladindata.com, buehnerfry.com, etc…). There are some developers here, that’s for sure, but you’ll notice, not too many open-source guys — mostly Windows-based systems.
Smart Solutions does a considerable amount ot custom software work. One of their software solutions as a product that allows users to easily maintain their website content. Although the site at http://www.smartz.com focuses on the web business, there is a small talented team of software developers here.
Thanks for your comments, Mark, however this post is REALLY old. I know some of the folks at First Choice/Smartz/Migration/whatever you guys are this month, and good programmers you are, but you’re obviously not on the ball when it comes to this stuff 😉
But thanks for stopping by!
Jake,
It’s been four years now but, this page still shows up in Google SERP’s so, it must not be too late. 🙂
