Never thought I’d see the day when the Oregon Ducks are #1 in both the AP and coaches poll after Ohio State lost last night. When the BCS rankings are released tonight, there’s a very good chance that Oregon might be on top of those as well. Not bad considering they didn’t even play yesterday.
Honestly, I’d almost rather them be #2 in the rankings, as the #1 team has lost the last couple weeks. Hopefully they won’t get beaten up by UCLA this next weekend.
Update: We’re #2 in the BCS, behind Oklahoma. We’re #1 in every poll, but 8th in computer rankings (one computer had us #11, one #2). That’s probably thanks to our strength of schedule, which has nothing on some of those SEC schools. Or something. The BCS is such a crapshoot anyway.

When Oregonians start to care as much about having a nationally ranked math department or physics department as they do about having a nationally ranked football team, we might have a decent higher education system again.
I’m an ardent Ducks fan, never miss a game, but we need to put things in perspective.
Agree 100%, HBM. Trust me, I wish that this country didn’t spend as much time on sports and spent more time on academics. But in the meanwhile, at least I have something to cheer for.
Jake: Me too.
