You can read the full press release here, but long story short, BBB is taking advantage of DOCSIS 3.0 to push up to 60mbs download. I would assume you will need a new modem for both the 25mbs and 60mbs products. I would guess that most BendBroadband clients probably have a DOCSIS 2.0 modem that looks something like this, and DOCSIS 2.0 isn’t built for this kind of speed.
While the higher speeds are great (though expensive for me, but competitive for similar services), it just means you’ll hit the BBB Bandwidth Cap faster. They did raise the cap to 150 GB on the highest end 60mbs, up from 100GB on their lower-end plans).
And while 60mbs is fast and all, many servers aren’t serving data that fast. This site is on a true 100mbs ethernet connection, but many aren’t (this site was on a 10mbs connection before), so while the 60mbs speed is a bit more than 400% faster than the plan I’m on, the likelihood of seeing 400% faster download speeds is pretty slim (unless you’re torrenting, which will pull data from a variety of locations, and then you might saturate it).
This comes the same day as their new logo design and branding. I don’t know if I’m a huge fan of “the dog”. I just can’t imagine rebranding all your vehicles and building signage — that can’t be cheap.

Note: I know this happened all a couple days ago, according to the press release dates, but I’ve been out of town. Also note: I like the folks at BendBroadband as well as the folks at other local high-end ISPs like BendTel and Quantum. BBB’s service has served me well for years. They even advertised on this site for years (anybody want that spot?). They’re good folks, I just wonder about the decisions being made there sometimes.

Hay thar, trollbaby.
First things first: Docsis 3 4 channel has the potential for +171.52 Mbit/s.
Secondly: boo hoo @ cap bitching.
r u serious? Any other provider on the surface of the earth does capping, they just do it slimy style, via throttling or customer drop.
You do realize that in an ISP customer group, only 5% of customers break 20 gig a month?
Only 2% break 10 gig?
And that 1% of customer’s slurp down 40% of the network bandwidth usage, like the 90 oz slurpies they feed their near paraplegic asses?
Who on god’s green earth breaks 150 gig a month? Hell, thats 15 copys of empire total war.
That’s 20 DVD quality movies.
That’s more porn than any single man could fap at in a year.
I know that you, like me, are a member of generation gimmie. But seriously. Think before you type, or, heaven forbid, you’ll come off like an idiot once more.
You are kidding right? Try living in KFalls in Charter land. We don’t have squat here for broadband … and the jobs are leaving.
Are things that boring up there Bend/Aspen? Hold back on the venti, double-rich, volvo latte next time.
Good lord …
HAHAHA…That was the most entertaining comment I’ve read in quite a while. Thanks, McShittenboot!
Re: your first comment about DOCSIS 3. I know it has a really high potential speed. Did I say otherwise above? All I was saying was that most people on BendBroadband’s network probably have an older DOCSIS 2 modem and would likely need to upgrade to get the new speed. You’re coming from a BendBroadband IP address, and probably have the same (or some variant) of the Motorola Modem I linked to above.
Second: My problem with the cap is not that I’m hitting it (I am close) it’s that most of my data moves in the middle of the night when it’s interrupting nobody and causing no grief at all to anybody. I move a lot of data for backups of my various home computers, for disk images and Linux/LiveCD ISOs, game demos, etc…, and I’m also streaming TV shows from Netflix, Hulu, and the like pretty much every night. I’m not like some of the guys who are griping that they now can’t stream radio all day now and that kind of thing — my usage is pretty much between the hours of 7PM and 6AM, which doesn’t conflict with BBB’s big-money business clients who need the speed during the day.
I honestly would prefer less speed and to not have to worry that that Netflix movie or multi-gigabyte data backup that I’m running overnight is going to cause me to go over my quota. The “to me it just means you’ll hit the BBB Bandwidth Cap faster” was a sarcastic remark more than anything, as I know it doesn’t work that way for 99% of the folks — sorry I didn’t put a </sarcasm> for you to clear that up.
@What!: You’re obviously not a long time reader of this site and don’t know a thing about me. I hate Starbucks (I prefer my caffeine in cold and bubbly form, and generally, hate the town Bend has turned into. I’ve lived here my entire life, have family here. Jobs are leaving here, too, so Bend is hardly paradise. We do have a nicer view than K-Falls, however.
And are you visiting family up here, What!? You’re posting this from a BendBroadband IP address, too. K-Falls, last I checked, wasn’t in BBB’s service area.
visiting, off to the Oregon game, and then back home.
It costs me about $45/mo for 10mbs at home … looks like 25mbs here for the same price. I couldn’t afford the 60mbs plan. I’ll leave that for the Bend/Aspen folks.
I have family in Burns and Lakeview … Lakeview has limited coverage at 5mbs (right, speed is usually 1mbs) while Burns doesn’t even have cable modem service … just tv.
Anyways, take care … time to see if you guys have a bar that caters to us the middle class.
‘Can’t say I’m a big fan of the new logo. It’s cute and all, but it’s begging to be parodied. I mean, how long until somebody does this to it??? (Ha!)
Or how about this (along those same lines)?
Or this
However, sad fact of the matter is, nighttime congestion still occurs, for that very same reason- spam torrenter’s DL at night, without caps.
Oops.
Insert modifier: “would”
Today, being 10/7, I talked to a sales assistant at bendbroadband requesting that my silver package be bumped from 12 Mbps to the newly offered 14 Mbps, seeing that it is “a free upgrade.” That’s completely false. In order to upgrade they require you to buy a DOCSIS 3.0 even though a 2.0 can more than handle it. They’re old Gold tier was 16Mbps. It makes no sense. The new modem is 79.00 outright. More BBB BS.
Local TV Rants
A couple local readers send in these rants about local TV and local TV companies. Discuss/comment below. Charlie send this in about Bend Broadband’s newest service:Today, being 10/7 I talked…
only 2% break 10 gig? lol, bendbroadband is scamming because south bend murphy and beyond HAS NO OTHER CHOICE. Its bend broadband, or dial up. I called 75 place’s from all around NOT ONE could hook up here. If I was across the street I could get other ISP’s.
If anybody knows any other ISP’s, please help me. We have 7 cpu’s and are very active in many film making, Imaging, Repair, CN2 and CN3. past few months, my Bend broadband bill has been $500 – $600 a months.
