My New Toy

Ken isn’t the only spoiled little b***h — I’m getting a new toy, too (even though Ken has far more toys than any of us).

My toy? Actually, not my new toy as the company is paying for it, but I’m getting a new laptop — a Sager NP5320V model. I’ve had good luck with Sager’s systems, and am typing this on an older one that I’ve been using for a few years.

Why a Sager? It’s a poorly-kept secret in the laptop industry that the bulk majority of laptops sold out there under a variety of names are made by just a handful of companies and rebranded slightly (kind of like kitchen appliances). Clevo makes all the laptops for Hypersonic, Voodoo, Sager, Alienware (at least they used to), and Mtech (among others). The one thing that’s nice about buying it from Sager is they usually have the newer technology from Clevo, and their prices are always far cheaper (and since I have a reseller account with them, they’re even cheaper than the public price).

So here’s some basic specs on the laptop I’m getting for about $150 less than their publicly available price:

  • 15.4″ WUXGA Active Matrix LCD Display Display
  • Intel® Pentium® M Processor 760 / 2MB L2 Cache, 2.0GHz, 533MHz FSB
  • 1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz
  • ATI Mobility Radeon X700 PCI-Express 16X Graphics with 256MB DDR Video Memory
  • 80.0GB (SATA 7200rpm) SATA 150 Hard Drive
  • 8X Dual Layer DVD Burner ± R/RW
  • Windows XP Pro
  • Built in wireless, gigabit ethernet, media reader, video camera, firewire, USB 2.0, etc

It’s on order and should be here soon, and then I get to start installing all my toys and then I get to get down to real work of making this site into a rockin’ site.

Update: By the way, if anybody wants something from Sager, let me know and I’ll sell it to you at my cost.

Going to be buying another laptop probably in the next 2-4 months. If you have a reseller account with them, would you be interested in making a few $$, and saving me a few?
Its for my wife. She was looking at an Alienware, but it looks like these guys get the same sort of systems, but about $400 cheaper for the system she is looking at.
Anyhow, let me know, and i’ll look you up when im looking to buy.

Hey Rick,
Check your email in a few minutes 🙂

Jake – congratulations on your new baby… err, I mean laptop. My Dell Inspiron has a 740 in it, and I think that is snappy enough, I am sure the 760 will perform wonderfully.
I am also glad you got a new toy. Even though it is not really yours, it is yours to use. And that is what counts.

colour me green!!.. well at least we know you will have a fresh install of Firefox ;p
congrats on the new toy!

I have two Sager NP 5320Vs. Both have the problem that after a journey (probably involving minor jolts/vibrations, such as on the London Underground); the laptops do not boot unless given a few jolts at a specific angle (laptop’s back towards carpet, making an angle of about 45 deg. with floor and laptop in closed position). Since I have imported these things in London, sending them to Sager again is not an option. I think the problem is some loose connection. I tried to open the laptop, but it seems it has two layers of circuits and I do not know how to get at the second layer. I need to know how to disassemble this laptop so that I can set the offending part/s right.
I am desperate for help. Sager customer support has not been helpful.
Please help me or give a pointer to some help other than Sager support.
