Couple who commited suicide in hotel left $200 for cleaning charges

I hope that if somebody decides to do this in one of our homes, they’re as curtious as these folks (from Obscure Store):

So they wouldn’t ruin the bed mattress at the Days Inn, the two laid down on the floor atop a blanket and pillows. They left a note apologizing for any inconvenience they might have caused in the hotel, and wrote a $200 check for clean-up.

Apple to use Intel processors?

It’s an interesting thought, and typical of the radical thoughts of John Dvorak‘s columns. His prediction: Apple Computer Corp. will switch to Intel processors within the next 12 to 18 months. He has some good argument as to why it might happen (or at least, why it should happen), but he goes one step further: run new Apples on Intel’s poor-selling (but very powerful) 64-bit processor, Itanium. Get OS X to run native on that proc, and it would haul-ass. But getting Intel and Apple to play nice with each other, without pissing off Microsoft, may be another chore entirely.

Another question I have: Where does AMD fit in all of this? AMD processors have always had a more efficient architecture, but haven’t been able to hit the high-gigahertz range to make them a complete knock-out of Intel (and their constant delays in releasing AMD 64 haven’t helped). If Intel wants to knock out AMD for good, a deal with Apple might be the way to go. However, I could also see AMD’s relationship with Microsoft flourishing if Intel works with Apple. But this is all speculation, obviously, and will probably never happen, but it’s sure fun to think about.

Site moving to new server

I’m in the process of moving the various domains I’m in charge of to a new server that will give me better control of things, so I won’t be posting until Saturday. Just an FYI.

Update: UtterlyBoring.com/net is setup with it’s own account on a new server (instead of daisy-chained off my orty.com account), DNS has been setup properly and propogated.

JakeOrtman.com has been setup with it’s own account as well, and there should be something at that domain soon.

Regular blogging will return tomorrow. Thanks for your patience!

War protester chains himself to the wrong building

OK, I won’t get into what I feel about the protesters who are clogging city streets around the country, making it dang near impossible for life to function if you have to drive through one of those places. But I just found this story from Obscure Store very funny:

Jody Mason padlocked himself to an entrance of the Washington State Grange building, thinking it was a sub-office of the U.S. Department of Energy. The Grange is a nonprofit, nonpartisan group that advocates for residents in rural areas. “I don’t think that’s ever happened before,” says the Grange communications director.

Update: He was arrested once he did get to the right building.

Power your laptop with booze

Toshiba has unveiled a prototype fuel cell it hopes will become the power source for laptops in the future, using alcohol fuel. I can see this being really popular on college campuses.

What to do in an emergency

Now that war has, for all intents and purposes, officially started, there’s no time like the present to have a bit of humor about the whole thing. The government’s Ready.gov site is full of oh-so-useful tips to make sure we’re prepared for chaos. But the best part is that the little signs on thier could be taken a ton of different ways. Click on “More” to see our take (sent to me by a buddy of mine — if anybody knows the original source, e-mail me). Update: Found the source for this.

Will War Wreck GPS Systems?

A interesting bit from Al’s Morning Meeting:

Drivers whose cars are equipped with a global positioning system (GPS) may be the first to know when the largest attacks break out against Iraq, a German automobile club said Tuesday.

Which network will blink first?

An interesting story in the New York Times regarding how the major TV networks are covering the war in Iraq, discussing when they start covering it, when they interupt their money-making shows, and when they go back to them. It should be noted that ABC was the last one to move to Iraq coverage last night.

How did I miss this movie?

After watching American Idol for a bit here tonight, and two singers sang a song from “The Wiz.” I’d never even remotely heard of this movie, so I head over to IMDb and look what I find. The cast? Diana Ross as Dorthy, Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow, Richard Pryor as “The Wiz.” The plot outline? “An Afro-American adaption of the Wizard of Oz.”

Thanks, but I’ll pass.

Case modding made easy

Just take your Dell XTS tower and paint the mofo!

dell case

No windows, no cold cathode, no special LED’s. Just some metallic paint, and time. (click thumbnail to enlarge)

I dig the copper…there’s not enough good lookin’ copper out there. Way too much gold.

I have no clue if the CD drives still function..I tried to tape them off, and used fun tack to cover any LED’s on the whole tower.

I like it!
